Gas Mileage AGAIN

Hey Everyone,
I know that this has been brought up a million times, but here is a million and one. I have a 2002 v6er with 16,000 miles on her. I change the oil every 3,000 miles, last oil change was 2,000 miles ago on January 2nd. I use Mobil one 0w-20 which is recommended for new fords and hondas requiring 5w-20 and I use a PureOne oil filter. My tires are all properly inflated (i checked today) except for one that has a slow leak due to a small nail, the tire pressure was at 33 instead of 35. Also, my MAC air filter was just cleaned and recharged only 500 miles ago. I put fuel system cleaner in it about 2,000 miles ago also, it says to only use once every 12,000 miles or once a year. I have been getting bad gas mileage lately, but I thought that it was mostly due to stop and go traffic here at school in Philly and going up steep hills near my apartment, but I just drove about 175 miles with 50 miles being city and 125 miles being highway, and I only got 18.75 mpg!!!!!!! :notnice: :notnice: Why they hell is my gas mileage so HORRIBLE! I dont get it. I either fill up at Exxon, Mobil, or Amoco. Is it the winter gas with all the Ether and stuff???? This really sucks :bang: . My highway speeds were between 70-80 mph. Does anyone have some insight, suggestions, or similar problems. Thanks. Also, i'm thinking about changing the plugs and fuel filter once school is done. I have not had a tune up since i got the car back in August 02. Thanks again.

Please Help.

p.s. i carry around 25-40 pounds of stuff in my trunk if that helps any??

the manual will only give you 1-3 miles to the gallon more than the auto. they both have the same basic overdrive ratio of around .70 so highway crusing should be identical, but city driving the 5spd will get a little better.

18.75 is a little low for combined driving but not too bad it should be about 20-24mpg so take your foot off the gas a little more often

i have a vert so i get considerabely worse mileage. I use Shell gas, which advertises an additave which reduces knocking in your engine, thus giving you higher mileage. I get about 19-20 combined, with normal gas its between 17 and 18. I dont have a lead foot, in fact the other day staring from stopped @ a red light, this little kia rio flew way in front of me....that should tell you how granny like i accelrate. For an auto convert though, thats good.

Since you're driving an auto try and let it shift a 2000 or under

also about 68 mph is going to give you optimal mileage :)

Well, before the blower, I averaged right at 20mpg. I have always seemed to have slightly worse gas mileage than most people on here for some reason. Maybe you are kinda in that boat, too. I have a 5 spd, too. Don't feel so bad, my friend.

if you find yourself weaving in and out of traffic tringy to pass cars for no apparent reason and you always try to be the first to leave the stop light and get back up to cruising speed.... you might have a lead foot

Doctor, your prognosis sounds correct :D How long do I have till my gas runs out :p Well, ok its partially correct. I average around 15 mpg in the city, but I think in the fall i got around 18, and i dont think my driving has really changed. Also how much does the ether which is added to the "winter gas" effect gas mileage...maybe this has something to do with it :shrug: Thanks. :banana:

I own a 2002 V6 Mustang with a 5 speed manual transmission and I only get 19 to 20 MPG overall with driving around the city/highway.

Don't feel bad. I have been getting 16MPG here in the very cold winter. When the warmer weather comes, you should be getting 20 to 21 MPG. No more than that. The average is about 19 to 20 MPG for the V6 for both the automatic and the 5 speed manual.

I get about the same gas mileage out of mine, maybe a bit worse. It's starting to pi$$ me off with the price of gas these days....I don't get on it much at all really... :rolleyes: :D ..ok, maybe a little, but heck, it's a MUSTANG...it can't be driven at 55mph everywhere you go, right?

Hey don't complain. If you cannot afford the gas prices you shouldn't be driving a car like the Mustang. Buy yourself a Honda Civic then. You knew what you were getting into when you first bought your Mustang. So don't complain. Either keep it and pay the high gas prices or sell it and buy something more economical. That's the only choice that you have other than driving a bicycle, taking the public transportation or walking. Which one do you want to choose?

It has nothing to do with complaining about gas mileage, its all about trying to see if something is going on inside the engine. It could explain plugs being fouled or something like that, i was just wondering if other people had sucky gas mileage with the winter gas, i am more than happy getting 18-19 city, b/c i know that i do not act like i'm driving ms. daisy :D :rolleyes: . So when they heck do they switch back to "Normal" gas :bang:

One of the things that might effect your mileage is the type/quality of gas you use. Always try to stay with the same brand, Mobil is good, Chevron too. I would stay away from Exxon and Amoco. The idea is if you keep changing your type of gas your car is not able to adjust to the chemicals in one type and make optimal use of them. Also keep in mind that Chevron has Techron and Texaco has Clean System 3 these also help out with keeping your fuel system, including injectors clean, hence better gas mileage. Yes you pay a little more for this gas but the benefit to your engine is worth it. Especially one that can be as temperamental as ours.
