Foxbody fog light problem

Hey guys, what causes my foglights to make all my headlights turn off?
I know this is very common...how do I fix it? After about 25-30 minutes of driving at night, my foglights and head lights flicker on and off. When I have just my headlamps on, nothing, WTF???

It was a Ford recall. They give you a beefier headlight switch, multifunction switch (turn signal) and a heavier duty jumper between them. Incidentally, if it goes on long enough, it will also burn out you reostat, and eventually start happening when the headlights are on but the fogs aren't. I doubt you can still get it as a recall but I know you can still buy it as an upgrade kit.

ford never had a recall for the fox body fog lights, the only thing u can do is the fog light fix in the last thread, i did it and it works great. carfull though, i got a ticket for driving around town with just my fog lights on. just a warning.

i have not read the upgrade in awhile, but i recommend putting relays on the lows, highs, and fogs. that way, about the most current you have goin through the headlight switch is an amp or so, if that (if the ISO circuit gets sourced from the headlight circuit. too lazy to look up Toms' diagram).

The recall wasn't for the foglights. having them on for too long burned out the headlight switch, causing them to do the cop car thing. You can't have the foglights on without the headlights, the wiring of the switch doesn't permit it.

Oh, and Ford did have that recall, that's how I found out about it. Went through IATN looking for bulletins from '91 when mine was doing it, it was on the official Ford recall list.

I have been looking for this information. This problem has been driving me nuts! It's a lot cheaper and sounds like a more permanent fix than the Replacement kits I've seen.

I did not agree with the tech article on this forum. TOO COMPLICATED

Here is what I did.
Measured the current to the fog lights. Mine were 3.6 amps DC.
Bought 30 amp relay with integrated blade fuse at auto parts store.
Wire the factory power wire (brown on 88-93) to the relay coil. The current draw throuh the coil was 0.3 amps.
Add a power wire from the battery circuit through the relay contacts to the fog lights.

Now when you flip the fog light switch you are only energizing the coil through the switch assembly and the main power draw comes directly from the battery (fued of course).

Problem solved. and you don't have to take the interior apart to fix this problem. I did both my cars in under 2 hours and it cost me about 20 bucks for 2 relays and some insulated wire crimps.
