Who knows Gears?

I have a set of SVO 3.73's in a box waiting to possibly be put in.
I also have a parts car that had some work done to it, Including gears and suspension. I was gonna swap the entire rear axle instead of just doing the gears.
I counted the teeth on the ring gear of my 3.73's and there is 40 teeth.
I then pulled the diff cover and counted the teeth on the parts car and there is 41 teeth on the ring gear. The guy I got the car off of said that they are 3.73's
But I'm pretty sure 1 tooth on the ring gear is a pretty big difference.
What would these gears be? 3.23's or would they be shorter than a 3.73? Like 3.90 or something?
If they are only 3.23's or something like that I guess I will put the 3.73's in
How much of a difference will the 3.23's be over my stock 2.73's

if you counted the teeth on the gears you have in the box and come up with 40 on ring gear, they are probably 3.08's. is there 13 teeth on the pinion gear?

i'm pretty sure 3.73's have 41 teeth on ring gear and 11 on pinion. you better look a little closer.

of course, 4.10's also have 41 teeth on ring gear, but have 10 on pinion.

correct my 3.73's have 40 on the ring.
I'll count the pinion tomorrow. for sure
I can't really count the pinion in the donor rear right now but I'll have to figure something out. I'm gonna get the numbers off of the ring gear tomorrow.
is there any other way of checking
I turned the axle today and it looked as if the yoke spun about 3.25 times to one turn of the axle

how did you count the teeth on the ring gear in the car? did you mark it with something? can't you just mark the pinion gear with the same thing? you can see back there far enough.

should have spun more than 3.25 turns if they are 3.73's in there. how about marking the tire, turning the driveshaft 3 3/4 turns and see if the mark on the tire is lined up where it was. one full turn.

those gears are 40 & 13 = a friggin 3.08
which I dunno if it'd even be worth it to put them in
I am swappin the whole axle because the T-lok still works in the other diff.
I guess If i don't like em I'll put in the 3.73's

I have a buddy who is sayin I'm gonna be pissed when I take my car on the highway with the 3.73's He says it's too much gear for the highway.
Whatta ya think guys?

3.73 are not to much gear for the highway. I just got mine done last week going from the stock 2.73 to 3.73 and made a 225 mile highway trip, I still got 22 mile per gallon. I actually like the 3.73 on the highway better than the stock gears, because I don't need to shift out of 5 gear to pass people anymore. BTW I used to get 23 MPG on the highway with the stock gears.

you guys just made my day....
I don't really want the little crappy 3.08's anyways. if they were 3.55's I might be able to settle with it.
I am gonna put the whole rear axle in with the 3.08's and when I get a few bucks in my pocket I'll take a lil drive upto my buddy's shop and he said he'll put em in cheap
He'll probably do it for a case of beer LOL. I LOVE CANADIAN LABOUR RATES LOL

3.73's are the perfect gear. Dont listen to your friend! You're going to hate those 3.08's no doubt unless you like crappy gears!
