C4 tranny question

Did Ford shorten the shifter linkage that is attached to the C4 between years on the Mustang II?
I noticed after I installed a rebuilt tranny I got from a II parts car that the inside shifter didn't match up to where Drive, Neutral, Park, etc should be. The new throw pattern seems to be shorter. After trying to figure out the problem, it seems that the shifter linkage on the tranny itself is about 3/4" smaller then the original I had.
Since both transmissions are from IIs, I thought they would be the same.
So, did Ford create a shorter throw for our cars?

I forgot to mention that I have been playing with the slider on the linkage bar; and, I've been adjusting the actual shifter in the car to try and make something work.
No matter what I do, the shifter throw pattern seems to be at least 1/2" shorter then the original.
Even on the metal shift pattern that requires the driver to use the button on the shifter to go into reverse is off. When I set up the slider linkage so Park is in the right position, the low-gear on my tranny will be where Second is supposed to be.

this is the proper procedure for adjusting the shifter. loosed the nut where the shift rod attaches to the lever on the transmission. place the shifter in the car in low possition then place the lever on the trans to low and tighten the nut
