Is a transmission install a DIY job?

Is taking the AODE trans out and replacing it with a remanufactured unit a DIY job? The only other thing I'll probably do is swap the converter and install a shift kit. Keep in mind I've never done this before and I'll be in my garage on my back. Time really isn't an issue, theres no rush. I just don't want it to be one of those "I wish I'd never started this" kinda deals. I was thinking about going with a performance trans but I really can't afford it ($2300). Besides I think its a waste of many for several reasons. I'm not making serious horsepower as most every thing else is stock. I only drive the car a couple thousand mile a year. Although I do race the car its by no means a race car and I'll never see 13's because I refuse to get a roll bar. HOWEVER, the car does have 120,000 miles on it and a bad case of covertor shudder. So it's time for the swap. SO...can I do this my self or not?

Thanks!

Well Me and my friend took out and put in like 3 different trannys in his 67. Keep in mind were only 17. So its not to terrible of a job its quite it bit easier moving the tranny around w/ a jack and a friend. But it took us about 2 hours to get it out then prolly about the same to get it in. This was also our first second and 3rd time lol. We didnt mess up the first 2 times jsut we were trying out a different 4 speed then that didnt work so we threw in a aod but then the converter or something wouldnt work w/ it so we had to take it out and put in another converter.. But all in all its very DIY

I replaced a manual transmission on my truck, parked out in the street. It took me three days, but the last day was mostly bleeding the hydraulic clutch.

I don't think it's any harder for an automatic, but it probably makes a bigger mess with all of the ATF.

Remember, transmissions are heavy, I dropped mine on my arm. Luckily my arm was resting on a 2*4 suspended between two jack stands. The bending wood saved me from a broken arm.
