About three months ago I started noticing hard-starts every now and then... takes about 3-4 seconds to start. I took it to Ford since it's under warranty (02 GT) and they said the starter was bad & replaced it. It was still doing it every now and then. I changed the fuel filter thinking that was it, but lately it does every now and then. What's up with this??? It's so annoying, it's practically a new car. I let my mom take it to the store once when her cars battery crapped out and she said she noticed that when she floored it it didnt seem to respond very well, she only noticed it once and i never noticed it until today, I got on it in 4th at around 2,100 RPM and I wasn't exaclty feeling that 300lbs of torque... I know the RPM's weren't that high but above 2000 it should respoind fairly well no? So what could my problem be? Could a dirty air filter affect starting? I would think the spark plug are still good at 18k miles. BTW. coincidence or not, I don't know but this all started the day I installed Flowmaster super 40 mufflers and used a STP fuel injector cleaner. I don't see how mufflers could possibly have caused this, and i had used the STP on various other cars for years and never had problems.

Try down shifting to 3rd first. :D 4th is overdrive, and you aren't going to get snap-your-neck-back acceleration when in 4th even with a V8.

You might want to check your fuel pressure. Maybe your pump has gone bad. I had the same symptoms on my 98gt and it turned out to be the that the pump was bad and wasn't holding the pressure. That's what caused the long starts and poor acceleration.

4th gear at 2,100rpm ... youve gotta be kidding me... your not gonna feel anything at those rpms... ever heard of powerband? as for the 3-4 sec starts... mine does the same every now and then... every GT i know has done the same thing... but still no one knows whats the problem... :notnice:

yea mine and alot of others do it, no one figured it out yet...including ford. anyway see if it only does it when the engine is fully heated.......it probibly do it when the engine is cold.

I agree with Kristian98gt. Your fuel pump has a check valve to hold the fuel pressure so it doesn't have to re-charge the fuel rails every time you start up. Also, during hotsoak your fuel can acutally boil into vapor if the pressure drops enough. Then it takes a really long time to start it back up.

You can do an easy test. When you first try to start it up, turn the key on and off about five times before you acutally start cranking it. This will help recharge the fuel rails. If it starts better this way, you've probably found the problem.

There have been a TON of threads about this issue :notnice: My g/f new '04 does the same thing. Sometimes it just sounds like it doesnt want to start. You should try replacing your IAC first, that will be the cheapest place to start. As for your problem flooring it in 4th... downshift to 3rd, then youll feel it pull. Your not going to notice jack in 4th when you hit it unless your at 3500rpm plus.
My car had the same problem from about day 1. I took it to SEVERAL ford dealers here in NC. Lets just say Ive had a 3 new IAC's, a new Mass Air Meter, a new TB, new hoses connecting my CAI, and 2 or 3 differenct EEC flashes from ford. None of which helped my problem. Finally I got fed up and said screw it. When and got some gears and a chip put in and the problem got WAY worse. It wouldnt even crank untill the 2nd or 3rd turn of the key. Took it in again and they did their checks and they said there was a bad eec code being thrown. Called my shop, they thought I might have gotten a bum chip so they said come on in and we will swap it no problem. Got the new chip put in and INSTANT fix :D. I was never happier when I went out the next am and the car started perfectly :nice: IMO its something with the stock EEC. There is a crappy code in there somewhere that Ford just hasnt found. After I got a custom burn on my Diablo chip though, the car starts perfectly :D
I know my fix isnt for everyone, but it worked for me.
Best of luck!
