5 lug wheels, we've been reading and learning, have ?

mustang2, asking Wart for help, is like asking someone to tell you why you and everything you do sucks and why they are god. Just skip past his posts.

As for the brake situation, here's my take... The Granada front swap is a cheap and effective way to get larger, 5 lug front brakes. Many places, even over on ebay, sell the conversion kits, which consist of new caliper mounts and usually GM calipers to use with the Granda rotors. That's the cheapest way to do it. On the other end of the price scale, you've got the $600 aftermarket kits. I found a solution between those two. Heidts sells a brake kit that uses the Granda rotors, but with 4 pison calipers. Do a search for posts under my screenname and you'll find info on it.

For the rears, I just had new axles made. The car I'm building will be a 9 second car, so I need aftermarket axles to be NHRA legal anyway. But it was only about $300, so it's really not too bad. I will just use the Ranger drums with it. I kept the stock MII rear axle. I simply added a Lock Rite to the open diff, and added SSM traction bars for lift and rear end strength. The axle tubes will be just fine and I'll prove it with mid 9 second ETs. :nice:

Hope this helps.

In warts defense "sometimes a wart has to be a wart" lets not knock everybody down If you got something to post then post not bash

Wart has almost II ice as many post as most of us and has been here for a long time

Its OK II have an opinion it shows identity vs followership.

II are different that why we love them and hate them they're not bolt on and OEM part are near non existant-- there are swaps out there but nothing will be as easy as it seems you are gonna run into snags

use the search feature you will find stuff we have already talked about many times over with out all the bashing read read read then post.

as for the brake swap rear drums hardly ever wear so don't waist time and effort changing to all all disc brake system unless you plan on modifying it and redoing the emergency brake system.

If its wheel selection you want--just have the front rotors redrilled with 5 lugs and you're on your way unless you're looking for improving braking.

I have had my stock brakes for 17 years just keep good pads on the front and if you want get a brake proportioning valve to even the system out front to back

Front brakes provide more than 60% of your total braking force.

$5 says, no make that $10, that you'll be looking for a new axle before the seasons out. Let's say a minimum of 10 sub 10 second runs.

Who wants to hold the cash.

And No, I don't think I'm God.

Thanks. I think. :]

Yeah, I have been here a long time, almost from the beginning. I don't know how many times I answered the same questions. Or how many times I have consulted my library. Or gone out and took a look in the garage, and in the drive before that, so I could be sure of my answer. I have archive hard drives with unknown gigs of scans and data. And for 19 of the last 26 years I had a II as a daily driver so I'm pretty good at keeping them running, not to mention some of the odd stuff I've done. And my formal credentials.

Guess what, Kids. You have alot more to lose in this relationship than I.

Must be something in the air...

Nearly every board I read has major flame wars erupting. Spring fever, maybe. Experienced people are leaving the public internet forums in fairly large numbers because of the stupidity of a few.

This particular forum hasn't had too much of it, and I tend to think it's because we're a small community.

Nobody asked, but I'll offer this: think before you post. Will the post benefit the majority of readers? If you have a beef with somebody, take it to PMs or email. I can't imagine anybody enjoys reading flame wars.

If you see obviously wrong info, offer the solution without ripping off somebody's head. If you believe it's wrong info, offer something to back it up, not just "that's a buch of BS". That line of thinking is why there's so much info that's wrong out there concerning IIs to start with.

We're all humans, so there are bound to be differences in opinion. That's why this type of forum exists in the first place, to share info and ideas.

Now, to get back to the topic at hand, zwhitr is right, you can redrill the front rotors and use the OE brakes. The streetrod guys also have 5-lug stock replacement rotors readily available. I didn't mention it before, because in my opinion, if you're going to add rotating mass in the form of larger/heavier wheels/tires, the Granada brake upgrade is a good idea from a safety standpoint. On my own car, I have redrilled OE rotors, but it was done in 1984, long before the 5-lug aftermarket rotors were available. The Granada "upgrade" (Wart hates that word) :p is on the list. In the meantime, since I am the only one that drives the car, and I'm old and don't raise he11 too much, the OE setup is working.

And for the few who do enjoy flame wars, check out realoldspower.com. Couple of real idiots in there, along with at least 2 posters that have never posted an on-topic post in the 3 months I've been reading it.

About 13 years ago, I installed a 9" housing from my 1959 Thunderbird parts car. If I recall correctly, it has 11" x 2.5" brake drums. They're friggin huge, anyway.
I cut off and discarded the perches from the 9", then removed the perches from the 8" II housing, and used a plasma cutter to widen the radius of each perch so they'd fit correctly to the larger 9" housing, and then welded them in place. All other gear is stock from the II.
The 1959 Thunderbird rear is 1" wider overall than the stock II rear.
In case some of you don't know, jeep wheels will bolt on the old Ford 5-lug car pattern. I found a set of 15x8 american racing outlaw II wheels at a junkyard taken from a wrangler, and test fitted them to the rear of my Stang, and they have an almost perfect back spacing. Luck has been in my favor so far.
Though I havent converted to Granada rotors on the front yet, so I've yet to see how the 15 x 8 jeep wheels fit up there.

5 lug

what i did was i sent my 8" axles to mosers in indiana(just do a search for mosers) had them fill and redrill to 5 lug and put new bearings on also, then bought 83 ranger drums to complete the rear. the front got them from heits(not sure of the spelling) and questions let me know and i'll help you thru it.
