The last couple of days my car has had the strange sound of a diesel....according to a couple of my friends...

Ever since I had my motor mounts replaced and underdrive pulley's put in...

Theres also an odd knocking sound coming from the passanger side of the engine, I've gotten a bad lifter diagnosis, and or a spun rod bearing...it seems to be only getting worse...its not a loud knock, but not a quiet one either...it seems to only come after the car is warmed up too...I've never heard it before up to 2 days ago...

I don't know what to do, don't know who to go to...

I'd like any and all advice possible...

By the way, car has 93k on it...

Man, sounds bad! I would take it back to whom replaced your motor mounts and pulleys. Make sure they didn't replacy your harmonic balancer. The underdrive pully is to be mounted to it, not replace it. If that doesn't work, I would take it to a ford dealer and pray :)

Ahhh - the dreaded diesel sound. Let me guess - you recently had UD pullies put in correct? Its your crank pulley (aka harmonic balancer). It is loose. It needs to be torqued to 110ft lbs. Get the free wrench from AutoZone and torque it.
I had the same diesel sound, and I have heard of others. I didnt bother with the torque wrench, thinking I was He-Man. Drove 3 days with this sound - and it fooled EVERY mechanic. They all thought it was a rod, bearing, etc. Mine was only torqued to 55lbs. Soon as I torqued it with the right tool, noise went away.

peace

edit....after re-reading your post, I see that you did in fact have UD's put in...Rest assured - that is your problem!

Okay great, thats what I'll do tomorrow morning (Saturday)...and I'll get back to you...

...however my friend whose a master tech at ford still thinks its a bearing...he doesn't think that the pulley could make that sound espically just hearing it more on the passanger side...

But we'll see tomorrow...

Thanks a bunch man, I appreciate it...

Only sure way to eliminate the possiblity of the underdrive crank pulley causing this is to just pull it off and put the stock one back on. I personally think they are not even worth it and took my steeda ones off my new engine.

What has made you come to this conclusion?

Crank pulley bolt was tightened to 115lbs today...

Sounds still there...I guy over on SVTPerformance.com said it could and may very well be the Timing chain tensioner...

Anyone care to comment on that one?

How loose was it before you tightened it? Also, the crank pulley itself could be warped. If that harmonic dampener isnt perfectly true, it vibrates - which causes that sound. Did you try putting the stock one on yet?

I was a mechanic newb as well, but trust me - tts really easy. All you need is to buy a dampener puller from Autozone. Its not that expensive if I remember...Before you get roped into an engine rebuild, do it, or have it done. Remember, ALL the mechanics (who specialised in mustangs and engine rebuilding) all improperly diagnosed my car too.

had the same sound u describe and came from the same place..retorqued all the pullies and nothin ..it ended up being my tensioniers....good luck

What did you do to fix? Did you take it to Ford, how much did it cost you if you did? Or did you do it yourself...level of difficutly? and did you drive it around with the problem?

So many questions... :hail2:

i took it to a local performance shop here in miami that specializes in mustangs, so the guy took a look at it and from the moment he heard it he tould me it was my tensioners....i drove my car for a while before i saved enough money 2 get it fixed..it cost me around 800 i might have gottan ripped off but i went 2 anouther shop and they gave me around the same qoute...he ended up changin the tensionser, timing chain and some other stuff....but since then teh noise is gone the car runs better than ever...good luck with it and hope this helps
