Hi everyone,
My husband recently returned from Iraq so last week I went and bought him a 01 mustang cobra SVT convertible. I was wondering if someone could tell me some things I could buy him that are not real expensive to help its performance and looks. Thank you in advance.

Tell your husband thanks for his service and welcome home!

Ditto...and NICE gift for him.
I would agree with the above post:

Steeda pulleys at the website listed above. Good for about 8-10 HP at the motor. Steeda tri-ax pulley. Same website as above, about $179 or so I believe. Just makes shifting the car fast much safer and feels better overall.

Anything else starts getting into the $500 + range for the most part.

You would notice a gear swap the most. Gears cost $160 - $200. Install varies.

A aftermarket catback would help a little, but makes it sound so much nicer.

Shifter & a cold air intake (CAI) are good mods also.

What color is it? If it's white & bought in Columbus, it may be my old car.

Thanks for all the ideas. I have about 10,000 but I was going to buy him stuff slowly I dont want him too spoiled. LOL. I bought it in a little town outside of FT. Leonardwood Missouri. I am going to give everyone a good laugh with my next question because I was always into camaros and not mustangs so I know SVT cobra stands for something but I have no idea what and I dont want to ask my husband because I am afraid he would go tell all his buddies at work and I would never hear the end of it.

O.K. all you can stop laughing now and answer my question.....

With that kind of money, and doing it slowly...go with gears then exhaust, then the shifter.

4.10 gears or 4.30. You will also need a chip to recalibrate the speedometer since that will be off. I would go with 4.30's.

Exhaust...an off road pipe has no catalatic converters on it so it makes it loud. The cat-back is the mufflers and pipe. Flowmasters sound great, but you will probably hear, "it doesn't give you any power". I say, mufflers are so it sounds good, not for power. If you are worried about 4 hp, then that's an issue in itself.

Since you just bought the '01, it's got to be used (right?). Soooo, before you shell out $$ for anything, you might want someone to check it out to see what (if anything) has been done. I mean, judging from your prior posts, it's entirely possible you have 4.10s, Tri-Ax shifter and FR500 exhaust in there and don't know it. Having said that, I'm with the rest on suggested mods (shifter, 4.10 gears and exhaust to start...then some killer suspension mods from Maximum Motorsports)

Good luck!

Look, see, she has $10,000 dollars to put into it. If a blower isn't at the top of the list, then just forget it. Gears and such are just for those of us that can't afford to put down $4K for a blower. She could easily do this w/ several more K's to go for "future" mods as to not let him feel "spoiled". Hell, she could even do a turbo set-up w/ $ to spare.

Hi all had hubbys car checked out as per advice from above and was told it had some kind of aftermarket underdrive pullys I forgot the name but I do remember the guy saying something about it haveing 5 stars on it. He also said it had some kind of aftermarket CAI that started with a d and is a side something. The big thing is that it has stock exhaust. Should that be the first thing I get hubby for the car?????? Please help, you guys are great and have been good with answering my questions

Don't know what 5 star means on the pulleys, unless he meant first rate. Then it could be steeda, they seem to be very popular.

A CAI that begins with D & is a side (inner fender?) could be the densecharger. I've heard both on this one.

If it's still got the stock exhaust, that is a great place to start. Thing is, exhaust sounds are in the ear of the beholder. It would be like asking us what color is best.

Comp orange and magnaflow. :p

This has to be the nicest present I've ever heard of. A big :nice: for you and :hail2: to your husband for his service.

Glad you had her checked out first. AT least you know you don't need those standard upgrades...

Opinions on exhaust are like a-holes, everyone's got one. That may be your biggest problem: Trying to pick an exhaust system that your hubby likes just as much as you (or whoever recommended it to you).

The system has three basic components, headers, mid-pipe and cat-back. Headers are the collector "tubes" mounted to the engine (where the exhaust first leaves). There are several forms of headers, and many manufacturers. The mid-pipe, is where your cat. converters are, if you have any at all. Again, many choices: Cats/Catless, X pipe, H-pipe -- there's about a million threads on these topics alone. Finally, there's the "cat-back" (i.e., from the cat. converters, back). Probably more options here than anywhere else, as there are many manufacturers of cat-backs, each one with its own distinct differences (some manufacturers have sub-choices, such as muffler type, as well).

He needs a new exhaust system, definitely. I'd write him a check for about $1500 and put "peformance exhaust system" on the memo line and give him a big "hug." He'll get what he wants, and save you a ****-load of hassle... Everything from that point on will be easy because he'll let you know what he wants around b-day, Christmas, etc.

 Thats great! anyways, that really is one hell of a lady! Anyways, www.mustangexhaust.com is a good place to hear some exhausts, the best idea if it was a gift for me would be to tell him your getting him exhaust, gears, and a short shifter for him and you want him to pick them out! then you cant go wrong! direct him to us as he will probly have some questions similar to the ones your asking! Good luck and.....uh....do you have any twins??
