I am about to buy a 78 II by tomorrow, so I need halp ASAP!!! its a mach-1 302 with a auto tranny, but as I was driving it...going from 1st gear to 2nd there was a slight pause, not a slip, just like a pause (1/2 -1 second pause).

Is this anythin to worry about? The guy said that someone told him that year had some way to adjust the tranny???

Thanks for any help.

not really shift kits come in different styles from mild to wild depending on what you want to do.

a generic kit just increases the fluid pressure by using different springs and/or rerouting fluid for around 20.00 or so. Most can be done without pulling the tranny just the valve body on your next fluid change and filter

As for adjustment the tranny some have an adjustable vaccum modulator mounted to the back.

It has a vaccum line running to it. --- pull the line and get a small standard screwdriver to adjust the screw inside the module. it only adjust a few hundred rpms though (earlier or later shifting.)

ps check the fluid level

If it's bad I would think it would slip. Check the fluid, and "smell it" If it has a "Burned smell" Its going bad. Look at the color of the fluid too. should be a nice red color, Brown is bad. IF the above check out your probably ok. If not expect around 800-1000 for a rebuild.
Good Luck.

I've destroyed enough transmissions in my life to be leery of any weird shift characteristics of a car that I'm looking to buy. All of the automatics I've killed have given signs of death before going, such as a pause during shifts, burnt smell/brown color/metallic flakes in the fluid, slipping, whining noises, etc etc.

If a C4 doesnt shift firmly and quickly and also doesnt snap instantly into gear when you go from park to drive or reverse, just expect to be pulling and servicing the trans at some future date, the immediacy of that depending on how hard you drive the car.
I hate transmissions.
