I've noticed a new rattling noise coming from underneath the dash when i drive my 99 gt. Now I know this could be ANYTHING, but I do know a few things.

1) It stops when the clutch is engaged.
2) It seems to get weeker as I shift from lower to higher gears.
3) It's not coming from under the hood.
4) It pretty much happens all the time, doesnt seem to be a pattern however at times it does seem to go away, but not for long. It may just be quieter.
5) It occurs when I'm iddling too.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I'd hate to waste some good money on a mechanic when I could be adding more mods...hehe.

Based on your stated symptoms, they resemble mine. I believe it's the throw-out bearing. Supposedly, you can easily fix it by lubing it with white lithium grease. Not sure how to do this, though.

really weird

I just heard my cricket sound yesterday!!!! It started whenever I let off the clutch and was in neutral or even when I was in first gear at a very low speed just rolling. I heard it when I was sitting in traffic. Then it stopped for a while and then it would come back when i would let out the clutch to test and make sure it was my car. It sounds like its coming from underneath the car, and it does go away sometimes. I just had my transmission replaced about 6months ago I sure hope they would not miss the fact that the throw out bearing is worn and/or not tell me. it feels good to know that so many others are having it!

KaPPaBaLL, has your spedo cable broke yet? That's what it is you know.

My 88LX had that problem when I replaced the spedo cable it went away. Now on my 98GT i have another sound cant tell if its the clutch or the A/C. When I put the clutch in the sound stops and when I turn off the A/C it stops too.

still trying to figure this out

I was in a parking garage today and I parked in a corner so the sound would bounce off the walls easy. When I left the car running in neutral I would here the cricket sound outside the car, it sounds like it was coming right from underneath the transmission. I am not sure what it is but it is also effected with the clutch, when I push the clutch in no noise, when I am in gear but going very low there is the noise again. The reason it may sound like its not there at higher speeds is because the car is too loud to hear it so I am assuming it is there. Is this a throw out bearing for the clutch? please help I am worrying I just put car on road this season.

welcome to the wonderful life of mustang owner ship! I too have several rattle/squeeke on my car that I have yet to figure out after over year of ownere ship.

1-Rattle on rear deck
2-Rattle near wiper motor
3-squeek on Tranny(this one I know is Throwout bearing)
4-Rattle under car near where cats would be
5-nasty rattle with A/C on(which is reason why I don't use A/C)
6-Rattle near CD player(I think its from loose clip that hold A/C panel)

But my car is not as bad as my friemds 86 Corvette tho :D

I went under my car with a car stethoscope and could not pin point where the rattling is coming from. It is getting a bit louder. It happens with clutch completely let out and when in gear at low rpms (the only time I can really hear with the exhaust louder with higher rpms).

I also have noticed a couple of things. It goes away when I push the clutch in a bit, but before the clutch is engaged and I can put the car into gear so I dont think it has to do with flywheel/clutch plate touching.

I also have noticed that the rattling does increase when I give rev the engine slightly when in neutral. I am assuming this is true when the car is in gear but again its hard to hear.

It still sounds like it is in the front half of the car and next to the transmission but could not see it from under my car.

Is this a possible Clutch cable vibrating or tapping against something else? Please helps guys and girls..

peddle chattering

I dont think so but to be honest I never felt for that. From what I remember I am pretty sure that my foot would be in it pretty solid but not pushing it down and it still makes that noise/chatter/rattle. But thanks for the response!!
