I'm getting a few KKK k03 turbos for free. Actually, i'm getting over 10 of them. They'll probably need to be rebuilt, but thats besides the point...

...my questions is, these are the turbos that go on vw/audi 1.8t, and 2.7tt motors. They're small. So i know the spool pretty quick. My question is, if i make a single/twin setup with these turbos on my 289, will they do much good? What good would a single one of these do? what about 2 of them? I dont want anything crazy. Just a very mild turbo setup on a stock 289. Would i need to forge my internals? Will the turbos run out of breath too soon? Just the sound would be intoxicating!

What would you do? Free turbos. Use them as christmas ornaments, or put them on the car?

i'd definately use them for the car,

on inlinesix.com a guy turbo'd his inline six and he loves it, even without an innercooler.

can I get in on that too. I have a vw beetle 1.8t and could use a backup and would like to put one in my 66 inline 6 mustang.

let me know if you would like to part with a couple.

I would try to use them. Read up on the systems, look at pictures, and gather info and the parts and try it. There is a guy on VMF who just recently fired up his turbo'd classic stang. The setup that he had looked killer. Do a search and look him up. If you are interested in getting rid of one or two of those turbo's let me know. Good luck.

Too small...

The KKK 03 is too small for your application, yes one would work, even two would work. The only problem is your 289 would produce enough energy to spool these little turbo's too quick which would result in too early spool.

This turbo is primarly for smaller engines to allow easy spool.

As you stated earlier you would need to reinforce the bottom end, keep your compression to a reasonable level, run a single 60mm trim at minimum with about 5-8psi.

Should be a straight forward setup, whether you choose to do a single or twins. Have fun!

One of the primary reasons for using small turbos is because they spool up quicker. This is great on small displacement motors (typical 4 cylinders) that don't make a lot of torque (or power in general) at low rpm. However, on a larger displacement 8 cylinder (including a 289) which makes decent torque without boost, small turbos can be problematic because they spool too quickly and can cause unnecessary exhaust flow resistance. Either one is bad for a turbo motor.

So, if you're serious about turbo'ing your Mustang, look at using a larger single turbo setup instead. I've seen several articles and a couple tech papers that state that a generously sized single turbo will typically make more power than 2 smaller turbos that have the same net displacement. You might look to trade a couple of those for a larger turbo from a Supra or something. Just a thought...

Whatever you decide, keep us posted, and drop me an PM if you end up selling 'em.... my pops been wanting to turbo his Fiat X1/9 for a while... one of those 1.8 deals would do nicely...

Good luck! :nice:

hi all. I know this is my first post but I own a 65 fastback and an Audi A4 with a 1.8T. I have been in the Audi/VW scene for 3 or 4 years.

That said, I think you'll have a hard time getting them to work on a SB ford. They just can't flow enough. Many people who own 2.7t and 1.8t cars dump the K03 for K04 or larger. I would have done this myself if not for the '65.

With a "typical" aftermarket chip (GIAC on mine) a 1.8t runs 14-15psi stock is ~7psi. The K03 is maxed out by 5500rpm. I have heard of a custom race program running @ 26psi but it didn't last long. Not sure what psi 2.7t run but should be similar to the 1.8t. HP on a chipped 2.7t is ~305. Keep in mind heat is a huge issue with Audi S4s (2.7t motor). Also, the turbos are different from 1.8t and 2.7t.

Why go to the effort of turbos and only go for a mild motor? Even a mild 289 would out flow a 2.7. You would have to look at some maps but I would be shocked if the K03s were not well past their efficiency using just 2. 4 would be WAY too much of a PITA to mount and intercool in a '65. Just because it's free doesn't mean its good.
