I just got done putting a new timing chain and new head gaskets on my car. It ran before I pulled it apart, and it should be running now. First time I put the timing chain on, I put it on the cam 180* off and got a couple backfires so I pulled it back off and found that. So now I know for sure the timing chains on right, straight up, dot to dot. The distributor was put in pointing to #1 on the cap at top dead center for sure, cause i put a screwdriver in the #1 cylinder and couldnt move it cause the piston was at the top. But just to make sure, Ive moved the dist. 180 around to and still nothing. I also know for sure Im getting spark from the coil, and to the plugs. Im lost here. With just a couple of backfires, could I have blown the new headgaskets? I doubt it. I also know for sure Im getting fuel cause I got fuel at the carb. My list is below for everything I have. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

Hopefully I'm wrong but you may have the same prob I had. I did a simple lifter install, and then proceeded to install the distrib 180 degrees off. Like you, I got a couple of backfires. Readjusted it and suddenly it wouldn't start at all.

See if you can run the trouble codes. I couldn't -- ended up having to get a new computer, after which it still barely ran. Turns out the MAP sensor took a crap too. Took forever to figure that out.

It's probably something else, but I'd start by trying to pull any trouble codes.

Sorry, didn't read your sig.

If you've got spark and fuel, only thing left is air. Or maybe fouled out plugs or something. Try spraying a little starting fluid in the carb and see if it comes any closer to starting -- if so then it;s prolly the plugs. Are all the vacuum lines (if any) hooked up?

i know you said you did it before but,

bring #1 piston(Front passenger side) to TDC on Compression stroke, and set distributor to #1, make sure you have the correct firing order.

if you snap the throttle open do you see fuel squirting into the carb??

How bad did it backfire and how new is your carb? If it was bad enough and you don't have protection against backfiring, you may have burnt out diaphram, etc...in the carb. We were off 180 degrees in my friend's fox body T top that we put a 351 in and it backfired pretty severly. He had to rebuild some of the carb. It would run as long as you shot carb cleaner into it after we rotated it 180 degrees back to where it should be. But it would not start or even attempt to fire on its own.

It gets fuel just like its supposed to. The carb was just rebuilt before all this like 1 month ago. I pulled the whole front of the motor back off again last night, I have yet to see if they still lined up on the chain, but I do know all the rockers move evenly and freely so I dont think it could be a bent valve, or pushrod if they all move evenly. Plus I just had the heads done and milled .020 and a fresh valve job along with new felpro head gaskets. Ill look at the timing chain and get back to you guys.

Heres some pics to show you guys.
