I dont post on here much but I hope that someone will be able to help me...

I have a stock 2001 GT, 5spd, with about 48,000 miles on it. I am going to try my best to explain my problem...

When I start my car, it turns over and the RPM's reach the normal level as they always do when I start my car(about 1500) Then, as they go down to idle, my car dies. Its like, after my car reaches 1500, the RPM's fall down, it doesnt stop at idle. Everything sounds normal when I start it; my Radio and lights come on too. I havent ever experienced anything like this. Does anyone have any ideas???

Thank you in advance for your help

I would check your Idle Air Control Motor (IAC) first. It is on the front of the intake plenum, it has a hose on it that goes to the intake tube. These things tend to cause 99% of no idle problems.

I agree. I had the same problem. If you have an IAC problem, as long as your foot is on the gas, your car will run, but once you lift your foot, the car will crap out. This is because the IAC is the only thing that gets air to the engine when you're just idling, and when it goes bad, your car is not getting any air. Your car is right about at the mileage where one would expect this part to act up. Mine did it at 40k.

The good news is that if this is indeed the problem, this is a cheap, easy fix. A new valve is about 50 - 60 bucks at NAPA and you can swap it on yourself in ten minutes.

Thank you so much! I thought I might have had a problem when my car was starting a little rough, but didnt realize it was actually a problem until it just didnt start. It has only been since Friday, but I didnt drive it all weekend. Thank you so much for quick replies!! I will post when I figure out what is going on...

Well, I cleaned out my IAC Valve lastnight, It was really easy to get to. I just sprayed brake cleaner fluid all through it and wiped it with a shop towel. It was full of carbon residue. It started fine after that and I ran a couple errands afterwards, but once it did fall a little when I started it. The RPM's dropped to about 500 and then went up to Idle. I think Im going to go ahead and get the IAC valve replaced. Its pretty inexpensive anyways.

Thank you for all of your info...I really appreciate it!

Ok, so this AM my car wouldnt start again. I figured I better not wait and I got one from The Ford Dealership. Its a Motorcraft, of course, and only cost 90$ after tax. OH well, I will find out for sure if the IAC Valve is really what my problem was! thanks again for your suggestions
