cam

i have been looking around and can't find anywhere where someone has put a roller cam in a non-roller motor... does anyone know how much of a power increase it gives i have been thinking of going to the salvage and getting one out of a ranger or mustang. thanks

I do believve that having a roller cam and followers put in would add around 15hp over stock. I am just saying this because 87-90 2.3 Mustangs come stock with 88hp, and 91-93 are factory at 105hp. I dont think there were any other changes with the exception of the roller cam.

Well, your on the right track , but this land has already been pioneered...so listen up! :)

87-90- non roller
91-93 roller cam

ranger roller's will work

91-93 2.3's rated at 105 hp
---Changes made (among other things)
A: dual plug head
B:distrubterless ignition system (DIS)
C:roller cam/followers
D: Mass air (87-90 were/are speed density)

The cam by itself is *maybe* 5-10 hp, but good to have none less...if the price is right. The roller followers are the important part anways.

so if u added mass air it would give u a little more as well.. u have to pull to comp. out of the other car as well correct? i might be getting a 92 lx so i can take the parts i want off of it and put them on mine but i don't want to do too much since my car only has 50k on it anyway.

So what kind of gains could I expect if I put the A237 cam in my 93 2.3l?
Im not sure, it would increase flow, but an unported head , un ported intake ...ive seen 20-30hp gains (rear wheel) on turbo setups . Not really sure, i think bhuff was running an a237 equivalant, ask him?

well all i can say is that i put the a237 roller cam in a ported and milled S/D motor and she runs like a raped ape. the only problem i have now is that she's always hitting the rev limiter and the plugs come out on the very light looking side. wish i could extend the rev limiter and also throw some more fuel into her at the higher rpm's. does anybody know what the next size injectors would be and what vehicle would they come out of? yes i have an AFPR and she's set at 45lbs at idle.

So I can take the cam and followers out of my '92 N/A motor and swap them into the '88 Turbo motor when I rebuild it and pick up some extra HP? Is the roller cam from a '92 2.3 'stang the same as the infamous Ranger roller cam?

If I remember right they are slightly different cam profiles. I think the Ranger has like a few foot lbs of torque more than the mustang cam. but don't quote me. In my opinion either cam ( 91-93 mustang2.3L - Ranger2.3L) would be way better than a 88' Mustang 2.3L cam.

Thanks to all that replied (and I didn't mean to hi-jack the thread).
Pro-Hawk, I know you said the '92 mustang cam is better than an 88 mustang cam, but is the 92 mustang cam better than the 88 TurboCoupe cam?? I have a complete '88 turbocoupe motor that I'm putting in the '92 mustang. Should I swap the cams when I have it rebuilt?

Thanks again,
WES

The stock TC cams are not a roller where the 91-93' mustang cam or 91-96' Ranger 2.3L is. Now the gain from putting in a roller cam into a 2.3T is probly small (5-10hp) but its a pretty simple/cheap hp gain. Also I've read that the roller makes a 2.3T more streetable as in easier driving I think. This is what I'm doing to my car as we speak to tell the truth. If you click on my link I got a few pics of the roller lefters/followers and the stock ones. Now I bought my head with a roller in it so I'm guessing its a Ranger but could be a mustang

If your going to rebuild the motor before installing it, I would pop a roller cam in it with some new cam bearings :D I would also do some port work on that E6 exhaust mainifold. I read where someone dyno a E6 ported to add 11hp :D Then if you're still bored I would port match the intakes ;) Man I got bored and started doing all kinds of crap on my car.

P.S. just saw your sig. Since you got that GT, I would go ahead and swap that cam from the 92 mustang to the 2.3T ;)
