Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

  • Sponsors (?)

Hello? TSB? TSB where are you?

Looks like Ford is continuing to *****ed us. We are entering the last month of the 2nd quarter with no TSB in sight.

My trans is better after the rebuild with the "new" parts, but it is beginning to be difficult going into second when cold. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't progress like before and start clashing again.

What are our transmissions options when the 3650 finally gives up the ghost? I see tremec has a new trans advertised. Wonder how well that shifts.

rebuild

Hey Guys, I get terrible grind when I shift into 3rd gear and have to rebuild. The car now has 40K on it, does anyone know of which "Upgrade" parts I should use during the rebuild or anything I should change (besides the whole tranny)? Any input would be appreciated :hail2:

These are what they used in mine according to the service reciept. Not sure if there have been any changes or additions. Good luck.

2001 Cobra - Just got it about a month ago, actually the first manual car I've ever driven. After a couple days of teaching myself to drive it, I was fine. Then I start REALLY noticing that annoying "grinding" that I get almost everytime I go from 1st to 2nd gear. At first I thought I had f'ed up the clutch somehow by teaching myself, but after doing a little research and asking around, I see this is quite a common problem. When I do shift, especially when I first start the car up, it feels as though if I pull the shifter all the way towards me, it is literally grinding against something, but if I ease it back from 1st to 2nd, the grinding isn't there as much, maybe I am just pulling the shifter too close to me when I shift??? not really sure, but from what's written here on this loooooooooooooooong posting about this problem, seems the TR-3650 tranny's are just not the best. So far no problems, 21k miles on the car, it still shifts into each gear no problem, just that annoying grinding from 1st to 2nd, no problems at all getting into 3rd. Dropping in a Pro 5.0 soon, hoping that helps somewhat.

Very true , if anything it will feel worse . The stock shifter has rubber isolators which absorb some of the grinding sensation . With an aftermarket shifter any grinding issues you have will be more prominent .

Very true...when I did the switch out to stock shifter a few weeks ago (to take it in to the dealership), the 1-2 shift problem was almost imperceptible. Put the Tri-Ax back in and it's seriously annoying.

I recommend putting thin rubber washers between the handle and the shifter lever to help lessen some of the grinding feeling you get in your hand. It didnt take away any of the preciseness of the aftermarket shifter to me.

2002 GT shift problems

Hi everyone,

We also have a 2002 GT which now has 30,000 miles on it. We have had it in to two different Ford dealers 3 times now. Each of the service managers has told us it is "normal" problems.

This last time we took it to dealer and left it over night. My husband met them in the morning to drive it cold. Sure enough it was a loud grind 1-2 gear and the tech said it wasn't right. They kept the car two days and were going to fix it. Today the service manager calls and said they contacted Ford and they said there is nothing wrong with it and can't fix it.

We will be contacting an attorney this week. I haven't read through all the posts yet, but wanted to add us to the list for support.

Our problem has been since the beginning. 1 to 2 gear grind when cold, and 2-3 occassionally.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Your story is similar to all of ours. It took me 1.5 years and 4 visits to get anything done.

Did you show them the part list in the thread? That seems to have worked in getting something done for several of us.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!

I found a dealership that will address this problem!! the notchy , grindy 1-2 shift!!

I have taken it to 2 other dealerships and got the BS story "we cant reproduce the problem"...........whatever

I took it to Autoway FORD right down the road from me . (I didnt take it there originaly because it is a smaller dealership and I thought the bigger dealerships may be more apt to help.....WRONG!!)

I just drove it home and it shifts like a dream!!

They didnt replace a single part on the tranny itself , they replaced the Quadrant shaft and clutch pedal assembly .

I'm not sure if this is a new TSB or not . It is #529043
The part numbers are:

1 F4ZZ-7506-A QUADRAN
1 3R3Z-7519-BA PDL ASY
6 B7AZ-2471-B BRKT PD

All covered under warranty!

I'm going to put my Steeda Tri-ax back on right now!!

:nice: :flag:

Well here is an update on this "fix" I had done 3 weeks ago . Its not a 100% fix . The 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift grind is still there but intermittent . Also it is not as bad . Possibly a way for FORD to "get around" the problem and provide a cheap alternative to actually replacing or rebuilding the transmission . I dread taking it back to the dealership again and going through the hassle . Damn I wish FORD would suck it up and give there customers what they deserve .

:bang:

I'm new to this forum old to others. My car was parked for 2 weeks but before it was parked I noticed grinding going into third at higher rpms and just thought well maybe I messed up it can't be the tranny. But now any shift into 3rd above 2500 rpm and clutch fully engaged is a solid grind and it refuses the shift. My warranty is 6000 miles over which sucks for me because the car only has right below 42,000 miles mostly interstate driven. Can ya'll tell me what this is and what I need to do besides see a mechanic?

02 GT 5-speed coupe
Borla h-pipe, Borla cat-back, FRPP 3.73 gears, Eibach Sportlines, C&L 85mm MAM, C&L Inlet Pipe, Accufab 75mm T/B, C&L Plenum, Superchip Mircrotuner (#1725) ---- 253 rwhp, 296 rwtq

Thanks

AHHH, me too! I just bought a 04 GT, and though I'm taking it easy on break-in (heh-heh), it sure doesn't want to slip into 3rd gear very nicely at 3.5-4K RPM or so. Seems like the problems are still out there.

Thanks for the information and reading, guys. I appreciate it!

_StangGT__ ,

Please read the thread. The dealerships are refusing to fix the problem by calling it "normal."

Yes but he was saying that he was 6000 miles over and only got 42k miles on the car so maybe there is something I dont understand but it should still be under warranty, if it grinds they should fix it even if they say that its a normal problem, normal problem is still a problem, but I understand that ford is just being stupid with those trannies, anyways maybe someday they will do something about it.

Well I guess I am just another one with the same problem!

I have a 2003 100th Aniversary Stang with 5000 miles on it. I noticed that 1st to 2nd seemed kind of clunky, but I just assumed that it was because it was new. At about 2000 miles I realized that it was still doing it and I thought that it would eventially go away. I am now at 5000 miles and still doing it.

It doesnt seem to be as bad as some of the posts I have read but it does do it from time to time. I think maybe the weather here in South Florida has something to do with it since it is HOT AS BALLS DOWN HERE :bang: !

I've got an 02 GT (12k miles, been grinding since about 9k), and like most of you, I thought that maybe I was just being paranoid, or that my car was still breaking in. I get the ol' grind between 1st and 2nd almost all the time, and it's hell when it's cold outside...Now that I've read all this, it's gona make it even more annoying than before :( Sometimes I'll shift slow and it'll go through smoothly, and others it'll grind like crazy...
