My First Stang ..Opinions???

Hi all!!!

Getting my first Stang today...

66' just wondering if according to the pic and the details if I'm getting a fair price at $4000.00 I'm in South Carolina so any input as to what this would go for somewhere else would be great..

NO rust that is visible, all original except for Radio , no dents, dings or window cracks...

Drum Brakes, No a/c (think I'll go for upgrading the brakes first) since I can stick out the heat for another 2-3 months...

Maybe I should keep looking and see if I can get one with a/c atleast for that price......

if you find one with a/c its going to be real expensive since its around 1000 bux if you install it today. the car looks good and try to see if the owner has any background on the car or how ong he/she has owned it and stuff...i cant see int he pic but is it a 289? if not the should be in great condition but if it is a 289 i'd say go for it.
 
Rust free can be interperted in many ways. The infamous cowl rust is the most common, you really can't see it unless you crawl under the dash and look up. Crawl inside the trunk and look up at the rear package tray area, inside the doors, under the car floor boards, etc. It's an old car so rust most likely will be around, unless the PO did a lot of work, but then he'd be asking for a higher price I would think. Still for $4k, it looks descent. Do a good check before handing over any money though.
 
Things to check for on the car: Look thouroughly underneath the vehicle, check the floors, rails, etc for lots of rust. If they are all rotted out you will have to replace them! Check the trunk floors for rust, inside of the quarter panels from inside the trunk etc. If possible lift up a corner of the carpet to have a peak at the floor pans from above (may not go over well with seller). I'd also take it for a test drive, including some highway driving, make sure it doesn't fall apart at high speeds! Sure does look good, just make sure you cover yourself, good luck!

hehe you could bang on my car and see rust flakes falling off. I agree, crawl under the car with a flashlight and a screwdriver and verify the unibody is in decent shape.
 
You should always check out any car thouroghly before buying, and if wanting to that "may not go over well with seller" then walk away, or better yet run. No honest person will begrudge you wanting to pour water in the cowl or lift up a corner of the carpet to see the floors.

The car appears to be solid, but could easily be a 20 footer or worse, a pic hides alot. A 6cyl coupe is the least desirable model so if it is, then it should be sharp and mechanically sound for 4k. Only for the simple reason that there are a million 65/66 Mustangs to choose from, so it's not like another one isn't right around the corner. Be patient and thorough and you should have no problem obtaining a desirable car at a desirable price.

As just a basic reference, go to www.nada.com and check out the very average very estimated prices these days to help you form some opinions as you go along.

BTW, that rear bumper looks like it may have been tapped or bumped at one time.
 
I agree with Pakrat, if he doesn't let you investigate something about the car thats a red flag. If I had known about all the rust that was on my 66 when I was buying it, there is no way I would have. I was a victim of having little knowledge on the subject at the time. Oh well, it was a learning experience, and I had fun doing all the floor and rail replacements, but not everyone wants to do those things!!

going back in a few hours to do a second-over....I will definately check all the areas that you all pointed out!!!..

It is from a dealer, came from rutherford, NC (not on the coast, so salt-free)
He's had it for 4 months...Think Pulling A CARFAX for 20.00 would be a wise investment???..

Interior is all there not show quality but decent

The engine just had new things put on (plugs, wires , dist.cap, new alternator, and a few other minors)

new whitewalls still have the knobbys on them even...

If I get it I do plan on restoring , altering stance, creature comforts (a/c),
disc brakes, power sterring, lose the 14's, and attend to the engine area...although it runs fine (no knocks, pings, etc..it has more potential I think)

You still did not mention if it is a six or not. I do not believe you can get a car fax on a car that old, and sadly the tell all Marti report is only available from 67' to 73'. There is very little info to acquire out there about the 65' 66' model year shy of running the tag info to find out how it left the factory and what is or isn't there still today. Just another reason to be twice as careful when buying one that is top shelf like a GT or Shelby, they are the easiest years to fake and people do take advantage of that.

If you are planning on swapping engines, adding A/C, redoing suspension, disk brakes etc. I would definitely pass. It looks great now, but if you had these plans it will kill you to actually do it. The old rule is to find as close to what you really want as possible. Even if you need to pay some more. It will cost you a fortune to swap a V8 in there (for example)...
