Trans question...throw out bearings

My car has been great since i had the shift fork replaced at 3k miles (was defective / cracked because of the crappy stock shifter) until just the last few thousand miles.

Recently i've been noticing two distinct things that were bothering me about my t-3650. First its been very difficult to get into reverse. It would go halfway in gear but not all the way. The only way i could get it in gear sometimes was when i shifted 1st-2nd then reverse and when that didn't work i had to do the old trick halfway engage first, depress clutch, and shift into reverse which usually works well.

My other issue just surfaced...when i shut my car off it started out as a little squeaky noise...later i heard on occasion a high pitched humming or whistling sound which i assumed was the throw out bearings.

Sure enough the dealer took it in (currently 33k miles) and replaced the throw out bearings. They are test driving it now to make sure it is ok...but the lady in the shop says they can't duplicate the reverse problem now since the throw out bearings have been replaced.

Would throw out bearings be related to both problems or are they missing something?

No.

Although I have the reverse problem from time to time. It might be temperature dependent, because it's almost random for me.

Sometimes it slides in like a champ, or like today at lunch it wouldn't go in at all.

Bummer about taking it to Ford when it wasn't doing it. I haven't noticed a trend just yet which leads to why it happens, so it can be easily replicated.

Fortunately when I took my TOB to be replaced, it was still squealing when I pulled into the service bay.

my 98 does the reverse thing reguarlly. i just usually inch it a couple inches in first and then it goes right in. My car has always done this since i have had it (about 41K). Its just one of the charaters of the car and is not that uncoommon.

About $30 for the TOB.

I've done it myself when replacing my clutch and flywheel on my 99.

Was a whole day process to get down there, with me by myself under the car and dropped the tranny into my lap. (Although I had help putting the tranny back up).

The hardest part is getting the input shaft and everything lined back up and sliding it back into place to bolt the tranny to the bellhousing again.

That and the low clearences on some of the bolts makes for some less than convienient moments.

That usually means something is wrong...

Well i got the car back and there is no more humming whining sound so that felt good to have it fixed right before warranty was up. since i've gotten it back it hasn't stopped when trying to go into reverse but im skeptical that there was anything beneficial done to help this problem.
