Ok, so I'm 99.9% sure the whine I have that increases with RPM's is from the tranny. I have all the neccessary tools to rebuild the tranny and looked at the info on the Hanlon site including the instructions and it sounds relatively easyas long as you take your time. The Questions are as follows:

1. Cartapes has a VHS on the rebuild but does anyone know if theres a DVD somewhere?

2. What are the chances I get this thing apart and realize that i need to replace the actual gears or other pieces not included in the rebuild kit?

3. Any guess on how long before this whine (which I assume is a bearing thing based on service manual and a conversation with a tranny guru) will turn into a car that won't drive at all?

4. IF I were to get a junk yard tranny to rebuild so my car is not down a whole weekend can I use any year that came behind a 5.0 with my existing bellhousing?

1. IDK, sorry.
2. Pretty good.
3. Depends on how much highway time you put in. Remember also that the longer you drive it this way, the more chance there is that it's getting more F'd up inside.
4. No, only the ones that came in the Foxes. The SN95's have a longer input shaft.

Sig. I notice it was a 2.3 conversion- is it the 2.3 T5 that's screwing up? I'm not sure the 4 bangers had the same one the V8's did- don't know if the bell housing would work or not.

You don't really need the video if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. If you can pull the tranny out, you can take it apart. Just download and print out the PDF manual.

As for tranny whine, does it do it in every gear but 4th and is loudest in 1st and reverse and quieter the closer to 4th? If so that's the manishaft being scored. It's a common problem in T-5's that run low on fluid.

Rebuild kits generally only contail bearings and soft parts for the sycnhros. Problem is most of the time when synchros fail or parts begin to whine, it's the hard parts that need to be replaced. A mainshaft is $250 new, but i picked one up for $60 shipped when my T-5 began to whine

i would go g-force. I currently have a liberty. Yeah, i got the video and its awsome. when i rebuilt my t-5 i brought the tv and vcr to the garage, and did it step by step, No prob.

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://cartapes.com also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it. See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ for the video.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

You will also need a magnetic base and dial indicator to measure the endplay ($20-$40). See http://www.mscdirect.com/PDF.process?pdf=1312&Keyword=Y

The tricky part is that you will need some shims to adjust the endplay in the two shafts: the new bearings will change the clearance. There is no way of telling what it will be until you get to the point that it is time to measure and check the clearances. Halon has the individual shims if you can wait for them. If you can't afford the wait, the auto parts store can sell you some shim stock and you can make your own, or have a machine shop make them for you. The shim stock comes in brass (easy to cut) and steel, in varying thicknesses.

Rebiulding the t5 is a piece of cake as long as you have the tools and a hydralic press all you have to do is take your time.As far as the noise my friends whined and it wound up being a gear not a bearing.

how much does a shop usually charge to rebuild a trans?

I got quoted 1,000 bucks at least from a shop around here. He said he has to open it up and check it out. This was with me willing to bring the tranny to him also. Kinda crazy. Most shops won't even rebuild a 5 speed they only want automatics.

I used the video and it made the job a piece of cake. It explains everything and I didnt run into any promblems.
