I test drove a bone stock 99 Cobra today, and it felt a lot slower than I had imagined.

Is there anything else that would sap power from the car? Or is it just that I dont know how to drive it right yet??

The car seems to be in excellent shape. It has 42K on it.

What RPM are these magazine guys launching at to pull high 13's in these things? My last car was a mid-13-second WRX, which felt much faster. I'm hoping I just need to get used to the car.
Was anybody else initially disappointed with their Cobra's power?

Also, does anybody have a dyno plot from a stock 99-01 Cobra?

I think it will just take some getting used to and learning to drive the car . These cars like to REV . you should be shifting around 6500-6800 RPMS , You will definately feel the power in the Upper RPM's . Also , the IRS will take some getting used to as far as launching the car is concerned . These cars are by no means "slow" . This is my 4th stang and my first modular motor and I love it . The stock gearing makes for some lag in the low RPM's but throw some 4.10 or 4.30's in there and she will really scream then!! Stock my car dynoed at 270 RWHP 285 RWTQ .

:nice:

I have a 99 cobra. I was wondering what it would cost tho throw on a set of 4.10's. around a ball park. To put them in and to pay for them. thanks. I have had mine for around 6 months now and i would say that i have learned to drive my car. it takes getting use to. when i first got in it i woudl shift at 5k. Thinkin i would pick up speed in the next gear. So wrong. now i shift at about 6,600 and i feel the power. I have drove my friends wrx and raced him a few times. I leave him all the time. We switched cars and raced he left me. It is sad when you see your cars rear end going down the track being drove by a ricer. lol that is the lowest of lows.

Id have to agree that most of the stock 96 to 98 cobras felt slow, but when I test drove my 99, my mind was made up. you really have to drive it like you hate it to get it to go fast, its great for me because I have a lead foot. But I too am putting in probably 410 gears, Im so sick of the lag off the line and stuff! I would also like to know about how much it costs to put in gears and what other little things have to be done during the process. thanks alot guys, and the wrx is really fast, but the cobra definitely takes some getting used to, it really is a whole new animal

I have to agree, I had a 97 cobra at one time and now have a 99. My 97 felt way faster. One thing that is true about my 99 is you have to stand on the gas and keep the rpms up. It might be the IRS that make the 99 feel slower but im not sure.

Pricing varies, but don't pay a ridiculous amount just because you have the IRS out back. Expect to pay anywhere between $200 - $500+.
Definately make sure your installer/shop has installed gears on an IRS before. A "good price" would be in the $200 to $300 range, once you get up around the $400+ mark, you are paying a premium - contact several shops to inquire about the job first!

Now thats somethin' you don't hear everyday. :nice: 97 Cobras do kick @ss though.

ha ha ha ha. so you cut it loose when you turned off T/C?
I let 'er have it for two hours on the ride home. Awesome car.

UDT- Car's definately not slow, but I'm gonna need mods, mods and more mods asap. This thing oughtta be a fun car to build.
I hear they respond well to bolt-ons....

throw some 410 gears in there and you will be all set, im putting them in my 99 for 400bux labor :( but it will make all the difference in the world. and by the way the 96 to 98 cobras are slower than the 99 and 2001. the power was lower and so was the acceleration times. I drove a whole bunch of them and they were not much faster than my 95gt with bolt ons. you made a good decision goin with the 99 (the 99 and 2001 are the best late model n/a mustangs!!!) , the irs does help it hook up some time as well :nice:

I have only lost two races in my lifetime. One was against an 03 Cobra and against a Supercharged built GT making 633rwtq. I have wasted GT's, modded Trans Am 6spd/auto's, ricers, etc, etc etc.

My only problem is launching the car. I know its running really strong though and hauls @zz.

I can do the gears myself with my friend's help.

How much are gears for a 99 Cobra? They're listed at $140, but it doesn't say for what car.
