Well everyone, since I just purchased my brakes (12" Sport Baers for the front   :nice: :nice: ) I've been looking for fairly inexpensive things to do to my car. I saw the post about the humphugger debate and decided to follow some of the other SNers in making my own.

Here is what I have so far....

What do ya'll think so far? I still have to take some body filler to it all to smooth it all out, along with making the upper panels. Those are waiting till I can find out the dimensions for a standard DIN cd player. Hopefully it should fit in the large vertical part... I think  . The circle in the second pic is where the cupholder is going. When finished it'll be upholstered in black vinyl, along with a spiffy shift boot for my A/T.

No no, I guess I was confusing in my post. The CD player is going to go in the vertical part (player mounted horizontally) right behind the cup holder level. It's not going to feed vertical, but that is a pretty cool idea.

aside from what loup-garou has already said i think it is going to look sweet. if i had known you needed a console though i would of told you about the 70 console i have, oh well. i'll probabaly have it for a while anyway. it looks like you are going to have a pretty tall armrest too, that was one of my only complaints with factory since it is pretty short. it's looking good for sure :nice: keep us updated on the progress.

looks like you've got plenty of room for some large speakers on the sides (near your feet). I've seen this in other custom units and it looks good. Can you ever have too much loud music?

Thanks for the comments guys...
I think some are still confused as to how it's going in. The tall part is the armrest... the cd player is going to be pointing forward. It's different, and I'm trying to make a custom bezel for the stock location out of sheet metal so mount guages, switches, etc.

I know there is a lot of room, the arm rest is pretty tall when riding in the car, but it is about the shortest I could go and still retain some usability with the interior of the console and keep the player where it is supposed to be.
Strangely enough, I already do have a stock 70 console ( a little worn) but it was taken out when I did my heater core, just never put it back in.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need atleast one vent I think for airflow to the headunit... I'm not sure if I'm going to be adding speakers in there or not, with this being my first one and all. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to put in the rest of the peices and start the body filler.

bnickel is almost right... I'm 20 going on 21 in 3 months :nice:

PB- yeah, unfortunately with the design I had, only one cupholder may be able to fit. THough, I still haven't looked at the peices I'm using, depending on how big they are, I may be able to fit two in. I'm following Jeff's usage of sub-box vents for the holders (Jeff's Home Page ) So we will see.

AND, I figure since normally if I'm drinking something while driving I hold it anyways, the passenger can put their's in the holder if necessary; and if for whatever reason I find a need to recite the redneck warcry "Hold ma' beer, watch dis..." (P.S. I neither practice nor condone drinking that kind of drink while driving) I'll just hand them mine.

By the way... nobody happens to have a cd deck out do they? If someone does would appreciate some measurements of the casing and the mounting hole needed... thanks.

Nice work! :nice:

I'll be tackling this one soon as well since I'm all out of play money myself. Keep us posted.

Geez Blake, seems like you and I have been threatening to do a console for a year or so now.
:rlaugh: :rlaugh:

(Although I have made a few and thrown them away)

I can't wait to try my new method of building mine. Should be interesting. I just wish these other projects would quit getting in the way.

LOL, I just had an image of me holding a plywood console up to a hostage's head. :p

You should see my impressive cardboard template that I have taped to the old stock console base. Very snazzy. I think it's the blue tape that really sets off the design. :nice:

Well, the radio measures 7"Wx2"Hx7.25"D. I thought it had the metal sleeve it slides into, but I don't. I imagine it's about 1/16" to 1/8" bigger opening in the WxH dimension. The depth didn't include the stud that sticks out back, or the harness.

I've recently found some spun aluminum cupholders that I'll be using in my Cobra if you don't like the subwoofer port idea. They're from Rex Marine and are about $12 each. They're available polished or anodized black (or blue, red and gold if thats your style). I've got two of the polished ones and they look great.
