Location of the SOHC on a 03 GT???

make sure you change the muffler bearings and blinker fluid when doing cam swaps on the SOHC. all too many times i've seen inexperienced mechanics damage engines because they forgot them.

Well said.

I was under the impression that a SOHC was just that....one cam for both heads. So I assume the cobras (DOHC) have four cams then?!

Thanks for clearing that up....and thanks for being a jerk DMBSTNG, ill be sure to check for you wifes oil level with my dip stick while im at it!!

OH NOOOOES!!!!!!

1st, learn to spell my screen name.

2nd, i'm not married. so you are stuck playing with your little dip stick by yourself.

3rd, learn to take a joke.

4th, if i really wanted to be a jerk, i'd make fun of how incredibly stupid it was of you to ask where the cams are on a Single OVER HEAD Cam engine.

that is all.

Wow, guys thats why people don't come here for tech anymore :notnice:. Just because someone might not know as much about a car as you doesn't mean you have to open up on them with the newbe comments. Honestly if you never cracked into an engine or worked on it you might not know what a cam is or what it does. At least he knew about cams he might not be experienced with newer OHC designs as opposed to the older pushrod models...

Well, yeah, that and the fact that most of the people out here really don't know what they are talking about anyway...(my apologies to those who do know how a car works and the essentials of how a V8 engine works, but the rest of your guys think tech is "who would win?" or "what do you think of these taillights?"). I realize the age or experience of the audience when I have to explain what pinging or detonation is... :bang:
And the Mustang talk forum is a joke...half of it is not even Mustang related...Hell, it's not even car related. :bang:
I'm headed back over to Modular Depot - StangNet is like a playground.

I agree, the forum should be a place to ask all types of questions. However, if a person has to ask where the cam is before they start to tear a modular engine apart, then in my opionion, they should be paying somebody else to do it. Not trying to be a smart butt here, just seen too many nubees screw up their engines trying to put cams in when they had never done it before. With that said, there is always a first time for everyone. But most of the time, the first time for anything is by WATCHING. Good luck if you go for it.

having 4 cams is both a blessing and a curse :nonono:

no kidding. anyone checked price on cams for our car lately??
Both OHV(5.0) and SOHC(4.6 in our car anyway) have 2 valves.
DOHC 4.6 have 4 valves(2 intake, and 2 exhaust) per cylinder, and have 4 cam shafts.
Benefit of 4 camshaft(and 4 valve per cylinder) is that with 4 valves, you obviously, gets more air in and out, and by having 2 camshaft on each bank, you'll be able to time much more accuratly with after market cam gears.

I wish Ford bressed ous with 4.6 GT engine with 32valve SOHC much like honda's...

the cams are under the valve covers, over the heads. we have one per head, hense the SOHC engine. Cams are generally pretty expensive, and with many cams you will need new valve springs, and other supporting hardware. I wouldnt suggest it as an early bolt on, as you can get good power from cheaper and easier bolt ons. (headers, mid pipe, after cat, gears, cai, ect)
plus the install wouldnt be overly easy onless you have some mechanical knowledge of the engine.
Mike

yeah changing cams will only net you some nice results after you do other mods. things like exhaust, pulleys, plenum, throttle body, etc. all that will help the cams live up to their potential. you don't neccisarily need new springs if you go with a mild cam, but generally bullittstang is right when you change to stage 2 cams.
