I know the mustang II communtiy is small so I'm hoping I can get some info from this forum. I've got a 78 II w/ t-tops. I'm going with a 4.6L SOHC BUILT modualr motor. My question is, does anyone know the guy that put a 2k3 cobra motor in a II? I've seen pictures on the mustangII.net, and wonder what all he had to do to fit that thing in there! I've already got a motor, computer, and wire harness.

If you can fit a 351 in a II, I don't see why you would have any trouble fitting a 4.6 in one....

A 4.6 is quite larger than a 351 Megan. Matter of fact, it's about as wide as a 460 :).

Specter, I'm building a 5.4 Lightning powered 78. I'd be happy to offer any advice you need, but keep in mind that this is about as far from "bolt in" as you get. You'll have to cut the inner fenderwells and have custom headers run outside the frame. Everything else will need to be custom made or modified, from the oil pan to the motor mounts.

You can check out some of my early pics here:

Here is another interesting fact for the 4.6L. In my last issue of Mustangs and Fords they discribed each block with heads, etc. The magazine said that the SOHC and DOHC measure the same size width wise. From my knowledge the DOHC are much wider ( someone shed some light for me ). CobraIILover, have you seen how far the 5.4 will stick out of the hood. I know that with an eldelbrock air cleaner my 351 stuck through my hood into the scoop. The 5.4 sticks up about three inches higher than a 4.6L if I'm not mistaken. When do you estimate that you will be done with your swap? By the way here is my email if you come up with some helpful hints :) Now I'll take alook at that link. Thanks again

WOW that is alot of motor. That will sure make a statement going down the road. Did you have any problems with the weight difference, how did the suspension react to the extra weight? SO MANY QUESTIONS, SO LITTLE TIME!

Hehe, it's going to be a neat project. Actually I'm building the car to be NHRA legal for 9.50s. I plan to compete in NMRA Modular Muscle class next year.

Even though the DOHC heads are twice as wide, the extra width goes inwards, towards the intake. So the overall engine width is the same. You should be able to answer your fitment questions on the 5.4 from my pics. As for ride and such, the car is not at that stage yet.

Just go with a Windsor stroker. Easier to swap in and will make more power N/A.
I'm with you! The biggest problem with that swap would be headers,as has been previously been discussed in this forum. Also like he said, you won't have to put in a new electronics system.
Even a mildly worked 351W without stroking would be a handfull in the HP dept.

I'll kick in with a thought on the 351W/headers swap There is a neat little mod you can do to make your 351W fit nicely with headers. What your do is center the engine by removing the motor mounts and useing a block plate on the front. This frees up both sides for headers. There are some caveats:
1) PWR steering is removed... OR custom mounting is needed and you lose the washer resevior.
2) Trans must be centered also. (no problem reverse and drill new holes in the crossmember.)

I've already got the 4.6 and the computer/wiring. I want a unique II and the 4.6 is going to be my starting point. The first motor that the car had (when I bought it) was a 351W. It jumped time and wouldn't crank so I pulled the motor and dropped in a 302 I had in a parts car II. I want a daily driver 400hp car and still be able to get great fuel economy. :)

302 is in the car with a C4 Transmission. The car is at the guys house that is doing the body/paint work to it. I've told him if he wanted the combo I'd trade up for $700 worth of labor. If you want them I live in Toccoa Georgia ( on the SC line ).
