Installation of new gears

All this talk about rearend gears really has me thinking I want to install some 4:10's. One problem, I have never done this and don't know the first thing on installation. Is this something that people do on their own. I am quite mechanically inclined and do all my own maintance and upgrades. I am currently working on sub frame connectors, and strut tower braces. Lowering it withing the next couple of weeks. You guys helped figure out how I am going to attack the lowering project, now I was wondering if you could assist me in swaping my stock gears in my 01 GT for some 4;10's. What do I need, what parts, tools. Thanks guys (and girls if you are out there) in advance.

I suggest reading how to do the gear change in the Shop Manual for the Mustang. If after that you feel confident enough to do it, go for it.

The Manual lists the special tools required and all the steps necessary. As far as what's needed if you have a lot of miles besides tools and the gear for the change, crush sleeve, pinion bearings (2), pinion seal, pinion nut, carrier bearings (2), pinion and carrier shim kit (there are kits that have all this so far), lube, posi-additive and I would suggest while your at it if the miles are more than 20-30k go ahead and do the axle bearings and seals.

You Deff need to shim the pinion, but I have never done a ford where the carrier needs to be shimmed.
