Hey, my cousin has a mustang 1988 stock motor with AOD. I changed his spark plugs and wires with him, he recently put in a new cap & rotor. When he starts the car up at idle it sounds like he has a cam but he doesn't, and at about 1500-2000rpm it shakes heavily. He's had the car for about 3 years and this is the first time we changed the plugs and everything.

First he had the problem then we changed all that stuff to make it better - no luck.

Anyone have any idea's?

Thanks, Mike.

Check the firing order of the plug wires. Maybe you got a set crossed.
What did he do to the car before this happened?
Could be fuel related.
Did you scan the EEC for codes?

I just had the exact same problem ,when I put one of my wires back on I put it too close to the headers and it fried the wire, so it sounds like your missing. You could have gotten a bad wire or maybe as simple as one just not snapped in???

like I said he had the problem first, then we changed cap/rotor/wires/plugs and it didn't fix, firing order is perfect, plugs are in perfect and everything i've done it a million times, something must have went bad or something happend - wat could it be?

Could be fuel related.

I had the same problem and it WAS fuel related. First question though: Is it carbuerated or EFI? My problem was that the throttle body was cracked. Secondly, if it IS a carb problem: MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT CARB. I had to cross-reference a TON of numbers. I went through three Holleys and an Edlebrock (all of them were supposed to fit) and it turns out that the only carb that would fit my car was one that was made SPECIFICALLY for that year and model. Come to think of it... I've had that problem with EVERY part I've had to replace
