First clunking noise... and now squeak? !!!

I have been having trouble with my passenger rear portion of the car. After the suspension was altered (May 2004), I began to experience clunking noise EVERYTIME I take off from dead stop. However, I fixed the problem by removing the rear sway bar. BUT I put it back on and decide to live with the noise.

Today, a new noise was born... squeak squeak. Again, this only happen when I take off from dead stop. I hope this noise is caused by the sway bar as well...

The question is.. what do I need to do to the car so that I WILL NOT need a rear sway bar? I don't want to kill myself or break anything when the rear sway bar is removed. Thank you all..

I dont know what causes this but it started happening to my car, as u descibe it, about 3 weeks ago. I thought it might be the shocks (kyb) so I had them replaced under warranty. Still didnt fix the problem. If I push on the rear passenger side I hear this knocking sound and on the inside it sounds like some interior piece was scrubing or something. Its so irratating and I still cant find this noise. HELP US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out your sway bar bushings, my SHO had this problem and would click everytime you took off fast or hit a bump at the right angle. When I replaced the bushing ( or something of that sort) it fixed the problems. I don't know what they are made on the mustang (never looked) but on the SHO it was plastic, and I think that what they are on a lot of cars.

I had the same problem. It was my magnapack catback hitting the swaybar. I adjusted the catback further towards the rear and the noise is gone...

I hate to say this, but Im starting to dislike my car as well. Dam_ shame that a squeaking noise can do this to your mental well being huh? I tell ya its so nerve racking though and after listening to the car, underneath, sides and inside, it sounds like its near the rear pass fenderwell, above the tire and inside the quater panel somewhere. I listen to the area around the sway bar and couldnt hear anything there. Is there anything inside the 1/4 panel that can cause this, or on the upper suspension where I cant see it. Please continue to help me narrow this down. THANK U GUYS/GALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loose rear shock? Might want to check the top bolt on the rear shock....or the bottom bolt for that matter....

Yeah, thats the first thing I did and it was ok. Sounds like its from a suspension peice up top though but dont know what other things I could check. Can someone give me a list of things to check.

I would check all the suspension mounting points....

-upper arm mounting points
-lower arm mounting points
-sway bar mounts
-shock mounts (already checked but listed here anyways)
-spring isolators (upper and lower).
-torque boxes (mounting points on the unibody for control arms). Make sure they aren't loose and that the spot welds haven't let go.

Another way to check for squeaks is to get a rubber mallet and tap suspension points.

might wanna try urethane spring isolators. i have an '00 and no sound at all from after i switched springs and shocks.

I'm 100% sure that it's the sway bar because I removed it and the noise was gone completely. Try that first.

Found out that it was the rear/pass shock. A friend of mine took it off and put it on a shock compressor machine and the upper valve was defective. Said KYB make fail protective shocks so if one of the valves fail, it fails in the open position (similar to a thermostat) so the car will still ride good. So what was happening was that when the shock depresses, the metal cup washer would bang slightly against the upper nut and the rubber bushing would squeak. Waiting on a replacement from KYB (free) to change them. (Cant beat that lifetime warranty)

Good stuff.....glad you found it. Squeaks and rattles can be a pain to locate.
