This problem Im having could be perfectly normal...but I just want to get your guys input. It doesnt happen all the time, but sometimes when I got to put it in reverse, it wont go... It will either not go at all, or will start to go and make a grinding sound.. I will try to put it in gear, or pump the clutch a little and it doesnt help. If i sit there for a little bit and be patient, eventually I can get it in with no problems. Is this normal?

Along time ago when I got my first car it did this. The dealer said that ford has a safty switch on reverse so you cant accidently put it in when cruising down the highway. I called a local transmittion shop here in town and asked them, and the guy was a complete butt and told me it was because reverse doesnt have any syncros, and it was normal. Which doesnt really sound right to me! anyone have any ideas?

I would LOVE to know the answer to this as well. I was about to post up a similar question. Do you notice it more often if you're parked on a hill??
I hate to hear that damn grinding noise, and usually when I start to hear that, I pull it out of gear, then just shove back in reverse quick. I have the same exact problem though, sometimes it just won't "fit" into reverse, and sometimes it somewhat goes but grinds. Almost as if something isn't lining up right all the time? Where's the tech guys at!! :D

We both have the same car, 2000 Silver GT. Maybe its a plot from Ford :rlaugh:

Sounds like it could be sychros (or lack of). I have this same problem and always put in 1st and then reverse this usually does it, if that doesn't work let the clutch out, put it back in, go to 1st, and then to reverse, works every time, pain in the ass but works. If you let the clutch out and then in and try reverse it will grind (ebarASSing) :nice:

I also have a 2000 GT and have the same problem, I usually just put it in first if it wont go right into reverse then back to reverse and it goes fine. My old jeep wrangler had a severe problem like this. I would always have to put it in 1st to get it to go into reverse, maybe its the way i drive or just a common problem, oh well, good luck.

maybe dropping in the t-56 would solve the problem  Dont I wish!!!

I park on a hill at work, and on my driveway everynight and you right, it is worse on the hills. Does anyone know when you should change your tranny fluid on the T-45? maybe that would help?

As stated above, 1st then reverse. All my Ford standards have done the grind. Another trick would be to inch your car up a little in 1st, then go to reverse.

Mine does the same thing. Every am I put it in 1st, then throw it in reverse and it works perfectly fine. If I try to go right into R I cant do it. My driveway is perfectly level, no slope. Well Im sure there is a slight slope but you know lol. My g/f car does not have the problem, at least not yet. Hers goes right into R.

PS I have an '03 GT, she has an '04 GT

I know the T-45 doesn't have a reverse synchro but I'm not positive about the 3650, I'll go out on a limb and say it doesn't either because I have to do the same thing sometimes. Also letting the clutch out then back in gets it in for me.

i'm pretty sure most trannys dont have sycros in first or reverse.

i sometimes have to pull forward a little to get mine in.

My wife's 01 with the T-45 does this all the time...won't go in, grinds, pops out. My 02 with the TR-3650 doesn't have this problem at all - I've never had any problem putting it into reverse. The 01 is a problem just about every time. Ya gotta monkey with it.
The T-45 doesn't have a rev sync. Don't know about the TR-3650.

Could be a safety thing. In the manual it says that it must be moved left of 3rd gear before it will let you shift into R so that you don't accidently go into it from 5th.

yea if you try to shift into R from 5th just like you would 1-2 or 3-4 it won't let you in, but if you try to go from nuetral to R it sometimes does something similar, more like getting stuck on the gear.

In my manual it says it's a safety thing to where you have it in neutral for 3 seconds then push it to the left past 3 & 4th gear then reverse. it still isn't as easy but i usually just go ahead and put it in 1st then reverse. it calls it a Lockout feature to prevent it going from 5th to reverse while driving! (that'd be bad) however i've never had to force it to where it grinded! ouch...

i think most manuals have this for safety. In my geo storm i had to put it in first then reverse. maybe with the 03's and earlier you have to put it in 1st then reverse. but yea...should be in your manual...

There is no syncro for Reverse. There are 3 different things I do that don't make it grind:
1. Put the clutch in and leave it in for a few seconds then put it into reverse.
2. Put it into a different gear then put it into reverse.
3. Put the clutch in and start putting pressure to put it in reverse, then let the clutch out just a little bit as you continue putting pressure and it should slide right in.
