I'm looking into gears for my stang '96 that was (supposedly) stock when I got it. I had heard that 96's came with gears as low as 2.73 so I wanted to see what I had. Cruising at 2k in 5th gear with my T45 and 295/35/18 rear tires I was at a pretty solid 65 mph. Down to 1.5k I was at slightly below 50mph... 2k in 4th gear put me at about 44, also. Running these numbers through a gear ratio calc and the only rear end ratio that matches up my numbers is 3.55... so I guess my question is if any stangs besides the Mach I's were produced with 3.55's stock? The car was purchased from a family member but this wouldn't be the first surprised I've gotten from the car (alluminum crossover NPI intake manifold, grille behind pony)

there are only two absolutely positive ways to tell.....

1- pull the rear end cover off & count teeth

2- jack the car up in the back. get a marker & mark a place on the inside of the tire & on the drive shaft, then turn the driveshaft. the ratio of gear that you have, will be how many times the driveshaft goes around, per one rotation of the tire :nice:

so if you have 3.27 gear, the driveshaft will turn 3 & 1/3 times, or to be more exact 3.27 times :nice:

Your car came with either 2.73's Std. or the Optional 3.08's from the factory.

Starting in 99-04 All GT's came with 3.27's with NO OPTIONAL UPGRADE :bang: . Auto's included!

3.55's are Std. and the only gear available on the 03&04 Mach's and Cobra's.

Gear question

 I have an 02 GT Vert with about 28,000 miles on it. Just recently I started having problems shifting. First started with grinding everytime I put into reverse, then second was hard to get in, and now it seems 1st and 2nd are hard to get in. I've been driving stick for many years so it's not that I dont' now how to shift. In fact a can drive the blank out of my 5 speed when I get the chance. Can it be the clutch so soon? Or some kind of adjustment needs to be made with the gears? I'm stumped. Seems to soon to be having problems????? :bang:
