Some clarification on MT's 05 GT track test

Don't get me wrong, the '05 Stang is an awesome car and I was real close to waiting for one but I agree that MT is a bit off in their comparison. This may be because the auto '05 is probably very easy to launch and get good numbers where a Cobra is pretty tough to launch unless you know what you're doing. As mentioned before I just can't see the '05 with 90-100rwhp less being within a few .1's of a Cobra.

That 5spd auto & 300hp was a great idea! It looks like a winner package that's for sure.

Power isn't everything when it comes to acceleration. Trap speeds, on the other hand...

I wouldn't doubt it if the 05 could knock off a high 12 second 1/4 with just some sticky tires.

Well, for what it's worth, the new Chrysler 300 has a lower coefficient of drag than the old Concorde/300M did, even though it's far more brickish.

And as far as the new Mustang being a unibody - hell, even my 40-year-old land yacht is a unibody! Nothing wrong with that.

Been thinkin' about this and you're 100% right. If you can't drive the thing then all the horsepower in the world won't make a difference. I think with good drivers in both cars that number difference would be much greater than .2-.3 sec., I've seen numbers as low as 12.5x for a stock Cobra but who knows what the conditions were.
All in all Ford did an excellent job with the GT, I'm excited for the guys getting one. Got to keep the great cars in the family :)

The 05 is balanced better for traction, so the closer times to a cobra would not be a suprise. Then again, a simple change in OEM tires (like to Pilot PS2's, etc..) will give the cobra a huge advantage. The 05 is just coming out of the factory ahead of the game, which <05's folks need to modify to get to that same level.

It's pretty simple to explain:

CAR -- Front - Rear weight balance.
2005 GT. 53% - 47%
Mach 1.. 57% - 43%
04 Cobra 57% - 43%
99-04GT 56% - 44%

Any idiot who ever tried to make their car go faster down the 1/4 mile knows that the first thing you do is transfer weight to the rear of the car. The much better F/R weight blance of the '05 will let it hook up a lot better off the line.

Then there is the vastly improved 3 link rear suspension, which will get more power to the ground without wheel hop. The Cobra can be difficult to launch due to its IRS which is prone to wheel hop if you don't know how to drive it just right.

hehe..

I know this is my second post. But the first time I read about the rear end you know what the first thing to pop into my head was....

Sounds like the rear off a camaro. 3 link live axel w/torque and and panhard bars. Works for me though. I've had "chevyfied" 9" rear end before.
