Info on 2006 SVT and SE Mustangs...

Can someone please lie to me and say the 06 cobra will have 450+ horsepower 500ft/lb of Torque and will cost under $40,000. It will help me get thru college knowing I will someday be able to afford a mustang that can beat a corvette stock for stock. Otherwise all this studying for a half decent job is worthless if I am gonna end up buying a GT and wishing I stayed as an automechanic so I could make up for the lack of HP/Dollar we spend with efficient bolt ons.

Lie to me, tell me sweet little lies!! :p

Sure, and you can pick your lunch from the gumdrop trees. :rlaugh:

The Cobra will go through some minor drivetrain changes, but nothing drastic. I'd expect to see the same motor & transmission that's in the 2003/4 Cobra, but uptuned to maybe 425hp.

I've heard that the new cobra will make about 500hp b/c it will compete with the updated Z06.

And, where, may I ask, did you hear this information from? Was it from Ford, a Ford employee, a magazine, or just idle forum talk?

Hey folks,
I just wanted to chime in and share a recent experience of mine. Last week, the ford, chevy, and dodge guys visited Virginia Tech (which I attend) and showed off several of their top shelf cars to the prospective engineering students. Anyways, the ford guys brought out a new '05 Mustang GT, and were sporting one of the prototype GTs (you know, the GT-40 update). I talked to one of the guys that worked on the new Mustang's powertrain development (which graduated from VT in '03 btw) for about an hour, and he said that it is very likely that the new Cobras will sport the 5.4L. I asked him all about it, and he said that it won't be directly competing with the Corvette in the sense that it's not in the right price range or class, but he did state that a lot of new c6 owners will be pretty pissed when they start getting their asses handed to them by cars that cost at least $10k less.

BTW, I actually got to sit in the GT while he revved it up. Man it was crazy, the s/c pulley is directly behind your head. Kind of trippy. He said that they had so far in testing gotten one to 213 mph, but they estimate that it can reach a top speed of 220.

Thanks for listening,
Kyle

Nope Ford said they are shelving the supercharged 4 valve Cobra engine.
The new engine is going to be different. Most folks are tossing out either a N/A or supercharged 5.4 as the likely Cobra motor.

Omegalock is correct. SVT announced many months ago that SVT is done with the 4.6L S/C engine that was used in the '03/04 SVT Cobra. SVT also said that Ford "could" used the 4.6 S/C in other FoMoCo models, but SVT was not going to use it again. But since Kar-Kraft has been selling the extra 4.6 S/C engines (at a great price) it does not appear that Ford will use it again.

The best I can tell was the the original plan for the 2007 SVT Cobra Mustang was to have a 400+ HP normally aspirated engine. However, lately I get the vibe that we will again see a S/C engine in the SVT Cobra. This appears to be because of all the 400 HP competitors, LS2, 6.1L Hemi, etc., SVT now thinks that it will need to have 450+ HP to be at the top of the power curve.

Look for the new Cobra to have some type of modified version of the Ford GT 5.4L motor. J Mays was quoted as saying "you don't really think we put all this time and effort into this powertrain, just to use it in a limited production run vehicle, do you?" Hinting that it's destined to be used in a future SVT vehicle.

Your quote is accurate, but it was John Coletti, the head of SVT which developed both the 4.6 S/C and the 5.4 S/C who said it.

'07 SVT offerings...

One thing for sure is that you can bet it will be using the new SOHC 3V heads, and it will most likely be a 5.4, and probably be supercharged. It just makes sense that they would want to use the same engine in both SVT vehicles, the Lightning and Cobra. They can use VCT to tune the characteristics desired for each vehicle. It just seems very obvious to me that they would do this, and it's what I'm hoping for.

I just don't think 400 naturally aspirated hp is going to get it done, assuming they can even get there with a 5.4 3V. The reason is the weight issue.

Actualy wrong...it will not be a 3valve...3valve is price/performance vehicles not high hp applications like the lightning and cobra. I thought it was already known for pretty much fact that the lightning and cobra were both going to have a twin screw supercharger mated to a DOHC 5.4L.

That's pretty much what most are assuming; myself included. But nothing is known for a fact regarding the SVT. It's a wait and see situation again... all over again... but –*hey! –*we made it through the wait-n-see period for the 05 GT, we can do it again!
