Dodge really muffed the new Charger

Jpjr said:
..well, it looks like it will have about 50hp more than the new mustang. they didn't muff that up at least.

...and nearly 1/2 ton more weight, thus negating the HP advantage. It's not always about how much power you make but how weight that power has to lug around.

All i am saying is that I hope that chrysler will not follow suit of GM and at least style the Charger with some links to the past besides the name. From the concept picture I saw in car and driver, thats not happening.

This is a good point that I agree with.. but I think that there is a balance however. I think that Ford has gone off the deep end with the retro-styling. I've made it no secret that the new Mustang is way too retro, and the only thing I have to base that from is the response that the Thunderbird got.

I think that the GTO has the same problem.. just in an opposite way. Like you said, it looks like a damn armored cavalier... but nonetheless.. like the Mustang... a very well built car. In fact its gotten rave reviews from every major car magazine.

From this perspective, I think that Chrysler has been right on the money. Their styling is fresh and exciting, but also not so curvy anymore. People are really responding to it..

The 300 is a cool luxury looking car for the masses and I applaud chrysler for that. The 300 was always a luxury "bankers hotrod" .

The magnum makes station wagons almost cool and I applaud them for that.

But bringing out a 4 door luxo barge and calling it a charger, even witht he future 425 horse srt-8 model is a disgrace. A charger is a legendary car that should have been brought back as a 2 door. Dodge charger is the epitome of 2 door muscle car name plates for many. Chrysler has a plethora of great names to use why waste Charger on a 4 door? But chrysler has wasted the charger name before anyone remember this POS with the charger name so I guess it could be worse.

As has been said the 300 and the Magnum both were unique in their own way and their styling helped them out a ton. The 300C looks so good people that would typically want a 40-50k car are buying them up. The Magnum is a wagon and anything that remotely makes a wagon look cool is going to get major respect. The Charger in it's idea is the most conventional vehicle at it's core and they have missed the mark a bit with this one. It's not classy looking, it's not really a "cool" look either. It doesn't pull from it's history well.
It's big it's blunt and looks like a pig in the front AND it's going to be heavy.

I DO like the rear half of the car and the 4 door thing I could get over it's just the front end is so...bleh...

That's the one thing about the internet you can get a pretty good feeling on how the general public as a whole will receive a vehicle. The GTO bared that out as did the 300C. The GTOs buzz was fairly negative and it didn't start selling until they started discounting them pretty deeply. The 300C had a very positive buzz among the different boards and viola...people are buying them up pretty quickly. The Charger even on Mopar boards is getting hammered unmercifully so I have to say I think a few people here and there will be buying them but for the most part I think they will be sitting on the lots some what until they get marked down.

Yeah, on my Mopar board there is one resident defender of the new Charger and about 100 other people beating up on it and saying they're gonna buy a Mustang instead (I'm one of them). I think DC could have gotten away with blah styling and two doors or great styling and four doors but they can't get away with lame styling and four doors. I'm waiting to see what the Magnum sedan looks like (hope they have a Hemi cop package in the sedan), and the 300C coupe.

Umm...

... what, exactly, is the point of a Magnum sedan when the Charger technically IS a Magnum sedan?

On another point...

...just about everybody has been missing the real point of the GTO and Charger-- they aren't meant to look like the originals. If the originals were continued non-stop to this day, I can GUARANTEE you they would look NOTHING like the originals.

How much like a '68 Camaro did the '96 Camaro look?

How much like a '68 Mustang did the '93 Mustang look?

I'm satisfied that the GTO looks like what it would look like if it were continued non-stop to this day.

Let's also not forget that 2-doors were the big mainstream market back then. 4-doors are the big mainstream market now. Thus, it isn't really that far-fetched that the new Charger is, in fact, a modern interpretation of the old Charger for today's 4-door-driven market.

Given the success of the Magnum and the 300C, if a Charger did come to pass, then look out, the Mustang will have a real tough time of it.

If it's gonna be four doors anyway I'd rather have a Magnum sedan because it would cleaner looking, cheaper and be more of a sleeper. Two doors sell just fine and are more appropriate for the performance oriented segment--BMW even stopped making the 4 door M3 cause it didn't sell very well. And one of the reason people are excited about the 05 Mustang is that it looks so much like the 60s Mustangs. The 99 Charger concept had tons of cues from the 68 Charger and was a huge hit on the show circuit.

Depends. Let's see how well the M5 and M6 sell against each other...

Dodge has placed themselves in a very unique portion of the market-- cars for new family men who don't want to give up their 'stangs and camaros. In this context, the new Charger fits in nicely.

Personally, I thought the 99 Charger concept was nauseatingly-gaudy. Didn't help that it looked a lot like a Camaro, too. :notnice:

Dude that is so right, a 4 door $45,000 charger srt-8 is going to steal a whole lot of mustang sales ford better watch it. It might even steal as many sales as the cadillac cts-v.

Yes I was trying to remember the MAgnum. That new Charger is most possibly based off the Magnum i.e. un hatched version. If you look at side profile it looks similiar. Low windows. It must be based of the same platfrom. They will have the same wheelbase, just badged a charger. It may have a stick but my bet is it will be a carryover of Benz suspension and tranmission parts. The only +ve good thing is it should have IRS.

Everyone is forgetting that point. I own a 2004 Durango with the Hemi. That is a bad ass motor. Any SUV that can do a standing burn-out at a red light without power breaking is pretty cool. I've also driven the Magnum and 300 and they are both hits.

Dodge's target market with these cars are us 30 to 50 year olds who have the money but don't want to buy a Town Car or Crown vic. They are giving us a "cool way out" of mini vans and SUV's. I agree they probably shouldn't call the Magnum sedan a Charger.

Dodge will also re-enter the police interceptor battle with the new Charger. They have already contacted some agencies about it. It will only have the 340 hp Hemi and not the 425. That is another reason for the 4 doors. Based on Dodge's recen success I think it will be a big hit. Dealers can't keep the Magnum or 300 on the lots. There are 2 dealerships near me that have a waiting list for a Magnum!!!!
