Is there such a thing as a "Factory Freak"?

Yeah, a factory freak, I was told that my car was one, because a buddy of mine has a mildly modded 88LX w/ gears, and we went for a little ride, i went ahead and floored it, so did he, he said he couldn't keep up. My car is mostly stock, w/ just an H-pipe, headers, AC delete, and Smog Pump Delete... maybe I just know how to drive my car :D lol

ummmm its a known "fact" at least where i am from that some mechanics when putting together the engines on mustang's do extra things to them. Case in point: My mechanic bought an 04 Mystichrome Cobra, we all know is rated at 390hp....less to the wheels, his car dyno'd at 400RWHP stock, and he added a steeda cold air......so hes prolly making like 420 rwhp....the mechanics at ford prolly did something "Extra" to your car. Then again my mechanic/friend's is a cobra, not just a regular old 5.0, but i've heard stories of it...

It appears you can drive better than him...or his car isn't in good tune...I bet he just can't drive his car...what is "done" to his car...

I don't quite believe the whole factory freak idea...I think variables like the "stripper" notches compared to a vert...or good drivers vs. bad drivers...makes the "factory freak" idea live on...

custom89stang - The 03/04 Cobras actually have around 425bhp (though there rated at 390)...they dyno around 370rwhp...it is kind of funny how your "mechanic" got EXACTLY 400rwhp  ...no offense but he could be exagerrating a bit...I really doubt a actual stock 03/04 Cobra will dyno that high compared to the others...if he bought it new...

He has 373's, full flowmaster 2 chamber exhaust, mac intake, and some other minor mods. i drove it and it felt like a 13 second car.. although it's a bit harder to shift, not sure why, probably because i have a different shifter..

.. i also beat a new chrysler crossfire a while back when i was bone stock, and those run 14.9's. who knows?!

The shifting could be related to your different shifter, his "worn-out" trans, improper clutch cable adjustment, etc...

His car "should" beat your car with relative ease if both drivers were equal...sounds like you outdrove him...

Many stock 5.0's can run mid 14's with a better than average driver...so I have no doubt you beat a Crossfire...

The driver becomes almost more important than the actual power output of the car...

I beat a 03 zo6 vette to 100mph in my 2000 GT but I know if a better driver was in that seat it would be WAY different...

I believe it is how the engine is taken care of thru its life...there is no way a car is going to come off the assembly line a second faster than the average...they have pretty strict processes at the Ford plants or any commercial vehicle manufacturer for that matter...

It is all in the tune, weight, condition, etc...all being equal (straight off the showroom-brand new)...there probably isn't more than .1 second difference with every outside (non-engine) variable being the same (driver, weight, condition, etc)...

Yup,there are definitly factory freaks,Ive heard too many stories about them.Take a look at rsw007,he is on stangnet. We have almost the same mods,I think he has ac delete, its a 5.0 with an aod, with bolt ons and gears.(the motor is 100% stock)He runs 13.3's.Cant figure it out

Like my sig. says,I only have 60,000 miles on it.I have the maintinance records in the glove box that dates back to 93.The oil changes look like this. The first oil and filter change was when the car had 300 miles on it.The next time was at 900 miles, then it was 1400 miles ect.,,,,,, The old guy had nothing better to do then take care of his stang :nice: So the car was pampered. Its still a second slower. And its not my driving because a stock motored 5sd would be proud of those #'s

Just because the oil has been changed doesn't mean it is good internally (I'm assuming yours is good) but oil change or records doesn't mean anything...something could be wrong with your car...even something as simple as being unplugged or sitting for to long...how bout both ya'll guys get your cars dynoed and weighed and that should give an idea why...

If a 5spd had the equivalent mods as your auto does it would run mid 13's with a good driver...

I agree, mid 13's with a 5spd.Im pretty sure his is factory wieght also.I just e-mailed him, maybe he will show up.When I first met him I was throwing all these questions at him also.I labled it a factory freak

i beleive in this too, when my 01 SS was stock i ran a 13.4, and that was bone stock. magazines were getting 13.6-13.8's out of them. but thats GM, im not tottally sure about fords, other then the 93 cobra had a much higher output then rated i think. ive always heard of GM freaks, but not to many tales of ford freaks, thats not saying it cant happen

Your 01 ls1 powered SS should get even a bit better than that...some get very high 12's stock (6spd)...and the autos can get 13.2's or so...

The 93 Cobra was rated at 235hp but actually had closer to 265hp...(cobra intake, 1.7 RR's, Gt40 heads, bigger MAF, etc...)

Hey 5spd GT whats your 93 running in the 1/4 with those heads and cam?

I dont' have any times yet because I've been fixing little things here and there...like two days ago I replaced my valve covers (the stock ones were cracked)...and I'm still breaking in my King Cobra clutch because the stock one was burning and slipping everytime I would "get on it" after the h/c/i swap...I know my first gear is useless now...

I'm going to try to go the VERY beginning of November or the end of this month if I happen to be available to go...

The car is quite a bit quicker (4k and up) especially and drives around like stock...

.560 lift on the intake side of the cam :nice:

I really haven't got to test out (multiple gears back to back)...I've just went WOT a few times up to 5800rpm or so and liked it :D

I think some cars are slightly different than others as far as performance. But most likely for you your car is just in better shape than his. A engine that is still in good condition will run better stock than an abused engine with bolt ons.

In my eyes there are no such things as factory freaks. I agree with 5spd GT here, there are reasons one is faster than the other. There are differences in cars as they come out of the factory, but I wouldnt call one a freak, as once you start modding everything changes. It is nearly impossible to compare two cars in a fair way as they arent ever going to be identicle. Some people run faster some run slower, I can almost say any Mustang is capable of running some of the fastest times, with the right mods and driving!

Factory freaks are real. Just not anymore. Back in the muscle car days, lots of substitutions took place when there might have been 6-7 different engine options for a specific vehicle line. It was not uncommon to "upgrade" a car if the required engine didn't meet the car on the assembly and an "upgraded" engine was there. Examples I know of higher horse power ratings than then build sheet called for. 10 vs 12 bolts for Chevys were commonly switched to 12 bolts. With less options, the factory freaks are gone.
