Alternator Pulley Question

well, the alternator nut holding the pulley in gave way tonight and the pulley completely stipped the threads. :bang: so, is this fixable at all? dont want to open it up if its not possible to fix

The same thing happened to me, except the nut came loose and all it did was that it was grinding the case cause it wobbled around. Lucky for me the threads were fine. It happened with the overdrive asp pulley. Cant explain why it came loose. :shrug:
 
That depends on how bad the threads are.

If they are just bunged up on the major diameter (top of threads) then you could use a thread file to clear them up and then go ever the threads with a thread die. If they are mostly damaged to the full depth of the thread, then your hosed. But not all is lost, you can take the alt. to a re-build shop and have the armature replaced, rather than replacing the entire alt. Look up automotive electric re-builters in your area.
 
yeah, i know of a good one in the area. just that i have an extra (stock non-3G) dead alternator here too that i can replace the armature with, if that were even possible. is that possible??
