MAF screen?

leave the screen and the bar. they are there for a purpose. if you want to learn the reason why, look on modulardepot.com in the 2v tech section. It is all answered there by one of the best mod tuners in the business

Has anyone removed the screen inside the MAF on their car? And what about the bar running down the middle? I was wondering if it would be a worthwhile and cheap mod.
Several people here have removed the screen and have had no problems. I myself still have it in.

I know there was a screen in the MAF I had in my T/A. It was there to straighten the air as it entered the MAF from an elbow. But GM used the same MAF in the trucks and that was where the screen was needed. I pulled the screen and ported the MAF and there was a big difference. That's what made me think of doing it to the Stang.

I say go for it!!, you just can't remove that little bar deal because I think that has a sensor in it.

Don't alter the maf in any way. Yes it is possible to gain a litle performance out of it because it could possibly lean the car out but I wouldn't do it. You won't pickup anything at all from it. do something with the tb and plenum if you are in the mood for modifying something.

go for it  Im telling you I did the same :bs: and on the same day went from trapping 99mph to trapping 94mph. Its a great idea
/sarcasm

Is that just from removing the screen? Are you sure it wasn't just your driving? Not saying you can't drive, only that times from one run to another differ. I honestly don't know exactly what that screen does so can't say. I just don't see how it could improve or hurt anything. If anything I would think it adds more restriction. Have any Dyno's been done with and without???

Don't mess with the MAF, the calibration is set for that configuration. The screen is there to take any rotation out of the airflow as it passes the sensor. It helps produce a nice smooth laminar flow through the maf so you get a reliable reading. As stated above, there is an excellent thread on mafs at the modular depot.

Blev - I think most people here will tell you that Jackie Chan is an excellent driver, look at his mods and his times, with a vert no less.

I left mine in. I've heard of a few people that had problems with it after removing it. I think I read that its purpose is to straighten the airflow. Any gain in power is not worth it to me (if there is a gain). I would just leave it on.

I'm not saying he isn't a good driver in any way shape or form and I believe I stated that clearly. I was only saying maybe his times/MPH differed from one run to another.

Also, thanks for the explanation of the MAF screen.

er, I think Jackie was exaggerating about the MPH?

It sure didn't make a lick of difference on my car but I put in a C&L MAF. I didn't even realize there was a screen (since it was stuck to the stock MAF) until a few weeks later when people were posting and asking about the screen. I was like "wtf?"

That was around the time I ran my best 1/4...

ok, sorry i wasnt clear... altering the post in the meter and removing the screen was a friends idea and a very bad one at that and the difference in mph was no exaggeration. There will BE NO GAINS consistently from removing the screen, so leave it alone. SOTP is :bs: if you ask me. IMO leave the MAF alone unless you need to upgrade or have a tuner tune the car.
