Exhasut Comparison (how loud it is)

  • Sponsors (?)

the magna flows i used were on my 1990, which is at least a v8 car. with similar pieces, my car was quiter and had a much mellower sound than N2OJnky's 1991 with 2 chamber flowmasters. i would compare the magna flow sound to borla muffflers. basically the same construction. any of them are quieter and less aggressive than my current spin techs. those things are loud, but wicked! they are also for sale if interested!

I can't give you an exact comparison, but I can tell you that Magnaflows (not Magnapacks) are much quieter than 2-chamber flows. I have Magnaflows on my 95 GT (and on my Cobra, coincidentally) with an offroad X-pipe, and it's a little quieter than it was when I was running a catted Magnaflow H-pipe and MAC cat-back (chambered, very similar in design to flows).

Did that make any sense? :rlaugh:. My point is, I definitely think that Magnaflows would be much quieter than two-chamber flows -- especially at idle and part-throttle. Once you hit WOT, the Magnaflows scream just like everything else.

Thanks for the replys.

Part of my concern with them (because they are priced well and look like a great kit) is when Todd (Todzilla) and I were running our cars on the dyno earlier this year, his car was slightly louder than mine.

Todd's: built 306, shorty headers, x pipe (cats?) and magnaflow catback vs
Clarke: stock 99 motor, BBK longtubes, BBk H (gutted cats) and 2 chamber flows welded into stock catback.

I kept thinking the difference was the built 306, his fealing is the magnaflows are just fricken loud.

Hi There,

Like Tyler said, I have a Magnaflow setup and live in Sammamish. I'm really happy with the performance, and the sound (really like the sound). Looks like I could have gone to a better muffler place as they welded everything in, but it works. LOL If you want to meet at the Safeway on the plateau, let me know. ;) - Mega

Remember, increasing cylinder pressure by means of increased compression ratio or using forced induction will make any muffler louder. I went from stock long block to a 10.25:1 motor with a little more cam. Using the same exhaust, the noise difference was night and day. Went from deep and mildly loud at certain rpms, to barking on start up and cracking like a whip stabbing the throttle.

So to save from any let downs try your best to compare exhausts on a car that is close to your motor combo as possible.

Just my 2 cents....

B

Killrb's input is very true, I just did not want to believe it. At this point I get the feeling that if I want to know how loud the magnaflow is on my 99 I gonna have to buy it and put it on. Even Mega's GT will not be an accurate comparison b/c he does not have the same motor, longubes or no-cats.

I do appreciate the input guys, I may shelve the idea of new exhaust for now, and persue other more beneficial changes to my car. I am also looking into a Torsen T-2 differential, and will be installing Delrin rear control arm bushings this winter.

Hey Clarke,

I'd be more than glad to let you hear my Fox body Mustang. It's got a 4V modular motor in it with a stock Cobra catted h-pipe and Magnaflows. That would be practically identicle in setup and therefore sound to your Cobra.

The thing that I have heard most about the Magnaflows is that they are quiet at idle and part throttle but really open up when you go to accelerate or are at WOT.

Let me know!

JT

PS I'm in Seattle

i'd like to do an exhaust comparison as well. i just want to see how mine sounds compared to everyone elses. any up for a recording session?
i am down... suggest a date and time and let's get this thing together... hopefully i can get my exhaust leak fixed(if i have it)

Have you looked at the Borla stinger catback, Clarke? It's a lot quieter than the Magnaflows (a hell of a lot quieter than the magnapacks), there's no drone, and they sound killer. Super quiet at idle and around town, but really open up at WOT. I'd go for those if I were you. Anything will be better than flowmasters, though!

Honestly though, I'd get the Torsen or a Tractech before replacing the exhaust. You'd be much happier with the results from that!

Tarch, an X pipe sounds a lot different from an H. To me, each different X pipe has it's own distinct sound, whereas every H pipe I've heard sounds like every other H pipe, regardless of crossover length and location relative to the exhaust ports. Just my experience, though.

oh yeah i knew that!

i just wanted to plug my setup... it's getting a little loud nowadays tho :-/

does anyone have any recording devices? i have a camcorder but not digital so i wouldn't be able to post anything. plus i don't know how good the mic is. i've been looking for a decent mic for my MP3 but haven't found one yet.

my weekends are booked through November but Dec is looking good. kinda cold but if there's a sunny weekend we could all get together and makes some vids.

Chris: My main issue with the Borla is a simple one:
140052 2003-2004 4V Mustang Cobra 2-1/2" Cat-Back Exhaust $699.99 (pricing from Need-4-speed.com) vs. 449.00 for a magnaflow. At this point I have shelved the idea of a new catback until the my other projects are completed, I will be replacing the subframe and control arm bushings and replacing the diff with a Torsen t2. Depending on what is left I may... replace the front brakes, replace the catback or pick-up a tweecer.
