Radar Detectors and License plate cover

Check your local laws before getting a jammer. On how well they work I dont know, but I know in Indiana its illegal to jam radar. As far as laser, if your detector picks up laser either you or the car next to or in front of you is being clocked if you arent. So laser detection just tells you basically when your being clocked. On a side note, laser can only be done when the veichle clocking you is stationary- so keep you eyes open and you dont need laser protection. Cops are trained to shoot the liscence plate or headlights for laser. Check local laws but smoke lens cover and plate covers can reduce effectiveness of laser.
As far as radar goes just get a descent detector and try to keep you foot out of it if you can. Mine has saved me multiple times, but cops know when you have one. I was driving down the freeway in the left lane (no traffic) and an unmarked cop rolls up on me, flips on his radar to tell me he know I have a detector and I get over into the right lane and he waves and blows by me just so he didnt have to change lanes.

Just my thoughts.

Sorry for the long post.

Radar jamming is illegal. FCC controls that. Laser jamming isn't illegal yet...

I think pretty much all new detectors have VG-2 protection which 'hides' your detector from radar detector, detectors.

getting a ticket in the mail is BS :(
Running a light is worse. I almost got freaking t boned like crazy by a minivan the other day right by the new (well, 4 month old) red light camera's.

I was ABOUT to go when I noticed they weren't stopping.. luckily I didn't go else who knows where i'd be... It woulda been a driver side impact.

I hope their car explodes.

V1 has the best laser detector. It's the only one that can warn you when the guy in front gets shot. A new V1 can detect Pop, so radartest review is not current. Blinder M-20 X treme is the best laser jammer you can buy.

A passport 8500X50 or Bel RX65 (same internals) are also good detectors for a little less money.

Don't waste your time with the sprays.

I have a V1 ($400) that has saved me countless points and $$$.

From my experiences: If you're going to get a radar detector, get the best on the market. I learned the hard way. If you have a detector AND get pulled over, more often then not you'll get a ticket. If you don't have one there is a better chance he'll let you off.
My personal experiences:
Pulled over with a detector: Ticketed 90% of time
Pulled over without a detector: Ticketed 30% of time

As for Jammers: Laser jammers are currently legal--I don't know how well they work though.
Radar jammers that actually work are illegal, and the worst part is that the police transmitter's will alarm when jammed. However, you can still find them if you look in the right places. They typically run between $650 and $1000.

My recommendation is to spend $300-$400 on a good radar detector.

Good stuff, glad you made it out of there.

I've heard nothing but good things about the V1. I'd get one of those if I had the urge to speed more often.

How do they know you have a detector, besides rolling up next to you and visually seeing it? For example, if I were to be pulled over, what are the chances he'd see me pull it down and tuck under a seat?

The hand of god can't protect us if the focker is turning the unit off and on at critical moments. :notnice:

But if you have your average lazy sheriff just sitting around with the unit firing down the road, waiting for some unlucky soul...........It might save you.

Not knocking sheriffs, just in my area in NC the troopers are nazis. :(

I haven't been pulled over, but when I do, I'll just turn it off. It's hard to find when mounted above the mirror with remote display This is my setup: http://www.geocities.com/joop1987/interior.jpg

Radar Detector = More likely to get a ticket.

I was pulled over 12 times before my radar detector. Never got a ticket. After I got it was pulled over 3 more times, all times I got a ticket. Needless to say, the mustang DOES NOT have a detector in it.

I dunno about where you live, but down here, when pulled over, if you're tucking something under the seat, you'll get:
1. A gun pulled and pointed at ya
2. A drug dog search (unless you allow the police to search visually
3. Both

Be careful out there!

speeding may be fun, but the risk of getting the ticket is the price you pay for that fun.

a detector doesn't prevent tickets... it just helps warn you when cops are around. you still have to pay attention to it. they can still pull you over and if you have a detector, odds are it will be harder to talk your way out of it.

i tried one once... it false alarmed more than anything, and was pretty annoying.

I have a radar detector(cobra) that I bought when I was 16 5 years ago. Still works pretty good, just remember it really only helps to alert you to the presence of cops and only works if they happen to radar the guy in front of you. I've heard of the liscense plate covers reflecting the radar too but I think it has to be the front liscense plate cover. I had one on my back plate (the only plate I have) and recieved a warning from a cop b/c it was smoked. Clear should be legal but I doubt it actually helps.

Hmmm, reaching around under the seat while being stopped. THAT IS A GOOD WAY TO GET SHOT. just my .02 cents being in the academy and all.

Covers are illegal in a lot of states, the spray is also illegal but nearly impossible to detect. Go spray if covers are illegal, then again if youre that worried about it, I'm sure one of the Middle eastern countries would be glad to sell you one of our stealths they "shot down".
