Oil Pressure

When i rev my car up the oil pressure goes down. And when im runing along about 85 its almost on zero. If i really get on it like say im drag racing it goes all the way to 0. At idle it carrys around 70lbs of pressure, My dad thinks its all going to the top of the motor and not getting to the sending unit, Would a Bigger oil pan help oil pressure at high RPMs? I would look at the guage.. What type are you running?

Something sounds backwards unless you have a major engine problem because the sending unit gets oil first so you should see pressure there...


I don't think it's running out of oil....

Hook up a mechanical gauge and get the true idea as to whats happening with the engine. It sound like you might have a bad sending unit or a funky gauge.

messed up spring in the oil pump and or a clogged pickup screen but that seems high for idle pressure , put a mechanical gauge on it first ....

Yea, i still have the stock guage on there, I got a mechanical one i might try to put on there. Just hope the line dont leak.. Thanks James

James, i would say DO put it on - dont think about it. you dont have to permanently install it, but it will be useful for diagnostics. i would care less about leaks on a gauge used for diagnostics (though teflon tape usually takes care of leaks).

i would install a gauge before driving it again. also, how is the oil filter? i wonder if part of it is a clogged filter which is gone into bypass mode (if the input and output pressure delta is too large, it opens and runs unfiltered).

Mine did the same thing, the oil pressure would go down when reved and sit high at idle. I put in a new sending unit and it fixed the problem.
