87' Mustang 5.0L in 65' F100?

my dad just finished the swap...he wants to use the 87-93 Mustang Distributor instead of the 79' F150 point distributor he's using now...but he was gonna order a distributor from MSD along with the cap, coil and wires.

what we are wondering...is...what all needs to be done to use the electronic distributor from the 87 GT into his 65' F100 truck? will he need to wire the whole harness/computer from a mustang? or can he just use the distributor without any problems? also...what coil will he need to use with the motor and distributor..if using the 87 Distributor? any help is greatly appreciated!:nice:

Are you using the mustang fuel injection setup in the truck or are you going carbed?

If you are carbed, your easiest solution is to use the distributor from a 1985 mustang GT-5speed and either use a duraspark module or you can use a GM HEI module (what I did). Its real easy and I can supply the instructions if you need them. You can use any standard coil for that. This is assuming that you are using the roller cam. If not, then that would require a different distributor with a cast gear. DO NOT use the old points distributor in the roller cam motor!

If you are going injected then you could use the 87 piece but of course would have to use the mustang computer, all the sensors and either adapt a mustang harness or use an aftermarket swap harness.

i'll have him use the 85 GT distributor...he is using the roller cam and going carbed...but one thing...he used the old points Distributor in the roller cam  we would love the instructions as well....any idea how to get the point distributor outta the block now? its stuck! :bang:

Here is the HEI info. I cant take credit for the writeup, I just saved a copy of it.

Ford HEI conversion

How long did you run the points distributor? When you get it out, check to make sure there is no damage to the cam gear.

he didn't acually drive the truck with the points distributor...its a project trunk...and it isn't completed yet...just been tuning it in the garage...i'll have him check out the cam gear to make sure....Thanks a ton for the info...it definately will help!
