Do a search on Positraction....Nearly EVERY locker company and 3rd member company out there has "positraction" listed for every type of vehicle they make for. If it was what GM named their unit it would be a trademark and would not be allowed to be used in the context the way nearly every company out there uses it.
Positraction is not a GM name, it's not owned by GM, it was never trademarked by GM.

Now GM used it heavily and probably more than other but it's not a GM trademark.
Umm, actually, SVTpilot is kinda sorta almost right. It's not GM's trademark, but it IS Eaton's. Eaton positraction units were used almost exclusively on GM products throughout the 60's and 70's, which is why the name "positraction" is so closely associated with GM products. See below from the Eaton web site.

"The Eaton Posi Limited Slip Differential was first introduced in 1961 on a 1/2 ton GM Pickup Truck. It gained notoriety during the 60's/70's muscle car era. Today, we offer the Eaton Posi Limited Slip Differential for older/newer automobiles and light trucks in the aftermarket."

It may not be a GM trade mark, I didn't say it was. But what I did say is that the term "Posi" is not a generic term for a limited slip diff, and that Mustangs do not have "Posi" rears.
You show me any Ford (or Chrysler) factory literature that describes a limited slip diff as a Posi or a Posi-traction rear and I will buy you a beer.

Back in the early 60s we called limited slip > positraction - no matter what brand the car was.

I have a hunch this is a "Harley" deal - by that I mean - Ape Hangers became a Harley word - Harley STOLE the word from the general public. They then started suing everyone for using "their word(s)". Harley just flat did not invent half the words it uses these days. I fully expect them to register the word "tumbleweed" some day (just a sec I need to go barf at Harley inventing words and phrases that had/have been around for years) lol.

Positraction is positraction no matter what the marking hype says and who sues who for using the wording lol.

I had a 65 but my buddies 64 Plymouth came straight from the factory with the "clicking" read end. Everyone called it positraction. It may not have been written in his owners manual but that is what we all called it.

Thank you :nice:

Chevrolet- PosiTraction
Buick- Limited slip
Olds- Anti-Spin
Pontiac- Saf-T-Trac
AMC- Twin Grip
Mopar- Sure Grip
FoMoCo- Traction lok

These are the names the auto makers had for their limited slips back in the origional muscle car era. these terms should be right. Yes, Buick just called em' "Limited slips", and Chevrolet called em' Posi-tractions. Now days all limited slips seem to be called Posi Traction. Hey, at one time the word "computer" actally belonged to a single company.
These are the way I remember, feel free to attack me and make me look like I dont know waht I'm talking about. :)

Not attacking you but look where are the trademarks? If GM or Ford or Chrysler had come up with these terms they would have trademarked them.

Here is the final definitive explanation of the "posi" thing. It is a tradmarked name, but not by the car manufacturer, but by the manufacturer of the differential unit, Eaton.

Positraction, or Limited Slip
Limited slip rearends work in exactly the same way, but, they resist this "turning at independant speeds" idea, by installing a set of clutches (or something else that may act like a clutch) on one, or both axles, and "hooking" the axle, or axles, to the ringgear carrier. The clutches are set to slip at a certain torque. By design, as input torque, from your engine, increases, the clutches hold on tighter, in an attempt to keep both axles turning at the same speed, relative to each other. When one wheel has no traction, a limited amount of torque is applied to the opposite axle, hopefully helping enough to get you "unstuck". And the difference between "Posi", "Limited Slip", "Traction LOK", etc? They have all become generic overused terms that basically can be used interchangeably. "Positraction" is a Trademark name, just as "Traction LOK", but have become generic terms, just as "Cresent Wrench", and "Channellocks", although both being specific brands, have become generic terms. ("CresentWrench" is a particular brand of adjustable wrench, and "Channellock" is a particular brand of adjustable slipjoint pliers). Another example is the term "COKE", which many people use as a generic term meaning Cola, even though "COKE" is a particular brand of Cola.

Hey man, I don't know. I was a rabbid Muscle Car fanatic when I was a kid (like, I had a problem) and I just know that these were the terms the companies used. For instance, in their advertising, thats what a "limited slip" was called. I know these terms don't fly today, and different companies have copyrights or whatever, but this was the past. And you cant change the past.

I'll give a go at the original concern of the topic question which I believe is if...you mash the go pedal to the floor and stand on the brakes a little in an 05 Mustang will it produce a one wheel whimpy burnout or will will it light up both rear skins in a delightful destructive display of new burnt rubber.

Is this what you were trying to ask? Was it? :bang:

no, I thought it was about the Mach 1's being female.

Actually , reading the original question, the original idiot, sorry Poster, thought that the new mustang had a spool solid rearend with no differential. That's the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

MOCK 1 ? This message board reminds me of the movie Joe Dirt .Next question will FORD have a Hemi with posi-traction and how does it work?

ehmmmm......actually the 4.6 does have a TRUE semi-hemispherical head to my understanding. And the Current Hemi does not. It's all just marketing.

And, i love that movie.

Hmmm... Mock1...

Maybe he was taking a shot at the Machs with that comment. I kind of like that. As in the Mach mocking the Cobra it will never be. :D

/runs and hides from the Mach mob... :p
