C4 to T5 transmission swap

Whats up guys,

I am seriously considering swapping my ailing C4 with a T5 this summer in preparation for much more freeway driving. I am by no means a skilled mechanic, but I think with the right resources I could pull it off. If anybody has done this swap or knows of good web sites/books I could check out to learn more about this, I would really appreciate it. I think I'm most concerned about the difficulty of putting a clutch into an automatic car. Like I said, I don't know much about this, but I want to learn all I can in sixth months and decide if its something I can do or if I should turn it over to a professional.

Thanks a lot,

-Matt

if you get all of the correct stuff its a pretty easy swap. You of course need the clutch pedal the rest of the stuff for the tranny and the swap. The only other two tricky things are the drive shaft length and you have to splice two wires together due to the automatics nutral switch.

you can also buy a kit that has all the needed stuff, i believe dallas mustang and mustangs plus have full kits with the pedal and cross member to change from a c4 to a t5 with a full hydrolic clutch. they price anywhere from 650 to 750 but you don't need to hunt for an old clutch pedal. you will need to modify your existing brake pedal and fab up a mount for the clutch pedal tho...

i've been looking into the same thing and will do this swap as soon as possible.

You can hack off some of the brake pedal pad, but the clutch pedal can be mounted to the old auto. pedal assembly. No need to fab up a mount.

I lucked out on that one...my car was previously a stick before the PO got his hands on it, so the clutch pedal is still in there. Hopefully I'll be doing the switch to a T-5 over winter break. Not sure whether I want to do the tranny or rear end now tho...the open 2.80s are getting old as well. If I wind up doin the transmission I'll drop you a PM while everything is fresh on my mind and let you know how it went.

The swap was pretty straigtforward. It is kinda a headache to get under the dash and change the pedals out but don't worry about the spring for the clutch pedal - you won't need it. The big question is if you are going to use the hydraulic or cable setup. Just continue to ask around here and we can help you out along the way.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. Anyone who has done this swap before or is planning on doing it, be sure to let me know how everything goes. I can't afford any surprises if I decide to go through with it, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, for anyone with a T-5, what kind of gas mileage you get? What are the RPM's at 70mph?

One more question... What should I buy new and what should I buy used? I would like to keep the whole ordeal under 1500 if possible.

Thanks again for everyone's help. If it wasn't for this website, I would probably be driving a japanese car by now :flag:
