I'm voting for the auto for quite a few reasons:

1) You get just as many gears as the manual.
2) No throw-out bearing to go bad
3) No clutch to wear out ... a torque converter will handle more abuse than a clutch ever will, especially when you're in stop/go traffic.
4) The auto makes your car worth more $ when it comes time to sell.
5) There's no man alive than can shift quicker than an auto.

Those are all the reasons I need to decide when the time comes for me to get an '05. I have almost 36k miles on mine right now with no troubles at all. I did the shift kit and tranny cooler when the car had around 7k miles on it ... I'm sure the both of those will give the tranny a longer life than leaving it stock. I'm not sure how tough the new 5 spd. autos are compared to the 4R70W, but time will tell.

I also drive an '05 Pete with an 18 spd. for work so at the end of the day I've had all the fun I want to have shifting gears manually. I don't need to use the clutch to shift in a big truck, but there's still lots of rowing through the gearbox all day ... I do enjoy shifting, but it gets old after a while. Rush hour traffic on the Parkway would also kill a clutch in no time since you don't have the deep gears like a truck does to creep along. That's why I'm happy to get in my car, put it in drive and just go when it's time to go home. My vote goes to the auto. :nice:

You for sure do no racing except on straight lines, if you are doing hard turning and your car gets to decide when to do the shifting for you , you will for sure spin out. the control of the man. is well worth the - $1000 and plus you eat up less hp though the drivetrain of a man and it is lighter

I could care less about anything like that because I don't race mine ... it's an everyday driver, not a slot car. To each his own ...

Auto! :D

Add a Torque converter, valve body and rachet shifter. Game over.
On my son's 95 GT vert, he took off 1.5 seconds off his 1/4 time. The auto will also take far more abuse than the stick. With just those 3 things, he kills my lighter coupe (he also weighs almost 100lbs more than me!) by 9/10ths of a second, and beats every stock 94/95 stick.

And I might add, I can easily handle the auto in the winter with OD on. A stick - no way. :spot:

I agree 100%. The norm is that you need to have manual with a sports car. However, a 5 speed automatic vs. 5 speed manual shouldn't be any comparison. The automatic should win every race.

And because my 05 Stang is fully loaded, it came with the auto. Didn't have much selection of course, since the supply is so low right now. But living in Chicago, with bad traffic all the time, it was more practical for me.

With all due respect, if your son picked up 1.5 seconds in ET (like, went from 15.5 to 14.0) by going to an auto, that means he was simply horid with the stick.

Again - no disrespect intended.

None taken.

He had an AODE in the super heavy '95 vert - loaded with MACH stereo, leather, etc. He also weighs 300 lbs. Those 3 things dropped him from a 15.6 to a 14.1.
Same car, same driver, same engine.

One of my buds had a Cobra, broke the axle. So he hardened the rear end. Broke the 6 speed. Put in a C6 automatic. His car is now completely changed - he now runs nitro-methane and is in the 7's. Still has a Lentech C6 in it.

Assuming 1) the gearing is the same and 2) the auto will actually shift okay. With torque management and modern electronics, it is very possible that the auto is going to shift like grandma to save drivetrain wear and tear. Assuming the auto actually does shift good, my money is on the auto.

That's exactly the point I was trying to make ... An auto is much more practical for my type of driving than a manual. I love driving a manual, but lets face it, they suck for heavy traffic conditions. I know a manual is a must for true sports car, but like I said I don't race on road courses or have the need for one so the auto is for ME.

The only racing I really do is at the dragstrip once in a blue moon ... if any of you read my sig you'll see when the last time that was. I just love the sound, looks and power of my Mustang and I enjoy my auto just as much as some of you do that have a manual. I never meant to start a pi$$ing match about which is better because there are so many different variables involved with both. For ME, the auto is the way to go.

This is a good question. An auto can be made to be more dependable and faster, a must for bracket racing. For fun, on a daily basis the manual wins more smiles and varying your acceleration rate mid take-off is much more controlled. The manual will get more MPG. If you do alot of city driving maybe a auto is your cut of tea.

For me the much improved clutch and manual trans. in the `05 is my choice. I've been hoping for this kind of smoothness for many years.
