Shifter Sounds

I got a pro 5.0 shifter about a month ago. After I installed it, when I hit 75mph or above, there was a major noise. It sounded like the shifter was falling apart from the inside. :bs:

I just got a new pro 5.0 from the shop and had them install this one. Well, it is still making the noise. When I installed the first one, my original shifter worked fine and I had no noise at all.

When could this be?

92 GT with T-5.......

Thanks all!

tranny noise/whine is normal with aftermarket shifters b/c of no insulators
right on. i put my insulator back on my shifter to help quell sounds.

if rattlling noises: did you transfer or renew the plastic bushing on the bottom of the shifter (that goes into the top of the trans)? if you dont have that, i bet you can get some rattling when vibes start rattling it.

good luck.

I mounted the stock shift handle to my B&M base -- custom made some rubber bushings to fill the larger holes in the shift handle. The result is most of the solidness/quickness of the aftermarket shifter, with much less of the noise that comes from the lack of rubber insulators in most aftermarket shifters. It's a world of compromise boys. Oh - be sure to loctite the shifter handle bolts. They do tend to vibrate loose - then they make a helluva racket - stock or aftermarket.

I made sure everything was tight and in the right place, but the sound is still there. The next thing I did was put the original shifter back into the car to see if the noise was still there. Well, as luck would have it, its still there. I think that it may be something with the tranny. :bs:

For some reason, the noise is only around 75mph and above. I am still searching and hope that its nothing major.

Thanks everyone! :nice:

It may be time for you to get an alumimum drive shaft. The 3:73's are making it spin faster at any given speed, causing more vibration and noise. High speed vibrattions with lower gears are usually DS related. My stock DS was twisted, felt like the car was going to fall apart above 80 mph. If you change your DS, replace the bushing the front yoke rides in. Its inside the tailshaft and you need a special removal tool to get it out and install the new one. The driveline shop was nice enough to loan me the tool.

The thing that I am woundering is could it be the tranny? I have the normal vib from the gears which is not a big deal. When the gears were put in I had the drive shaft looked at and everything was good, just the normal vib from high rpms'.
What is in the top of the tranny that would make a rattling noise? I am taking it to the tranny shop within the next couple of days. Thanks again
