4.10 GEARS

  • Sponsors (?)

I got mine installed for 250 bucks. Driving your car in the city is a LOT more fun now. I don't have to shift as much as I did before. As far as highway goes... my rpm stay around 2200 at 65. About the gas mileage, over all it went down about 10 miles per tank. I do both highway and city driving. My overall experience with 4:10s : I am glad I went with em ... if I had a choise to redo everything ... I would go with 4:10's again .. no doubt about it!!!

an engine being efficient at its torque peak does not mean that is the most fuel efficient spot, it just means the engine is burning the fuel better (gross oversimplification). Our cars torque peak is at like 4000rpm, are you gonna tell me I should drive around at 4000RPM everywhere to get the best gas mileage? :)

No but I drive down to abilene texas 2 times a year from lincoln nebraska and I have done so from day one with the car. I dont beat the piss out of it on that trip and I run just about the same average mph 75. I got 27-29 with the 2.73's and i get the same with the 4.10's. I also drive 100 miles round trip on the interstate to see my old lady. I make this trip twice a week and my mileage is identical to stock.

BTW 80mph cruise is 3000 rpm vs 2000 with the 2.73's.

Can I ask where you got this done for 250???? :nice:

I've read many reports that state FRPP gears are the best and most quiet. I'm running full synthtic Amsoil geal oil with my 4.10's, together with Ford gear additive, and installation was $250. While you're at it, you might as well get one of these for piece of mind:

Don't fear the gear!

:nice:

Today I went to my local ford dealer and asked a pricing on 4.10 gears and installation.

There quota was:

$350 for installation
$240 for the gears
$119 for the install kit

I didnt even know I needed an install kit. I feel that the price for install is far being its done at a ford shop and being done by someone whos done it numberous times. The price on the gears is insane and the install kit seems to be a little pricey too.

$709 total to change from 3.27 to 4.10s. I can find the gears cheaper but cant find a place to get the FRPP gears and install kit at the same time. I was readin that if its not installed correctly or adjusted right it could whine. I dont want to have them installed and for there to be a whine and ford wont adjust it. Id be ****ed.

I almost forgot U need a speedcal to so it cost an average of $800 to correctly install gears.

The cheapest ive found was:

Ford install in florida: $350
Summit Racing FRPP Install kit:$110
RPMoutlet FRPP 4.10: $169
DM speedcal: $99

Total before tax: $728

Looks like im not geting gears for XMAS.

Find a shop that specializes in rear ends and trannys. It will probably be half that or less.

Precisely. I had mine installed at a Tranny/Rear end shop, and it was absolutely perfect. I would also trust a specialty shop's work more than the dealers.

Just to take this a little further.

Most shops that specialize in this kind of work obviousely have mechanics that dont do anything else and they may rebuild 20 a week. Now if you go to a ford dealership most of the guys in there maybe do 10 a month. Also it is usually half the labor cost as a dealership.

If you dont have big pockets dont take you car to a dealer for non warranty work unless you absolutely have to.

As long as you do not get the Race only gears. I have know several people with those and they bitch and bitch about them. They are softer than normal gears and they make more noise and dont last as long.
Why do you say that? I have not had a single problem with my richmonds and the softer metal is better for racing and makes them stronger. Why is glass so easy to break? No flex.

I stand corrected.
The race only gears are "harder" and are designed for closer tolerances for drag racing only. Since they are harder and I think the gear pitch is different they will make more noise than a street gear. Dammit I always get hard and soft thing screwed up oddly enough my old lady does also  .

I didn't know they made race only gears. I thought it was all in how much backlash you have. I had mine set around .005" which is a street/strip setting, but set more towards the strip. The more backlash you have, the higher the teeth will ride on the ring gear, so less strength. However, the closer the teeth are, the less distance between them so the gear oil can't get between them as well. This increases noise because less oil between teeth is less fluid dampening of noise. This also means that the gears will get hotter.

Did you have yours done at a local shop or a chain store? Did you purchase the gears from them as well? If not where did you get them from? I'm in Calgary and looking for somewhere around here to do my gear swap.

Anyone else around Calgary know of a good place to have this work done?

Thanks!
