Quick question as I'm putting stuff back together with this Hammer shifter...

The console was just short of a nightmare to get back on over top of the shifter -- and yes, I did take the handle and trigger off. Now that it's back on there, the very front of the shifter pushes up on the front section of the shifter section of the console. I can take pics if need be, but I'm hoping if you have done this you know what I mean. This section is sometimes cutout when installing a 5-speed shifter for more access to bolts, but I'm wondering if I trim this if it will sit flat. My rough measurements and eyeballing looks like trimming the edge would be perfect as well as being unnoticible.

I did test fit things back together and it looks like it won't be a big deal and may not be noticible as is, but I'd like it to sit the way it's supposed to if I can. The instructions have been pretty good so far, but no mention of cuting the console that I saw. I suppose if this is the worst part of it, it has been pretty good so far -- just a poor section of the design or instructions it seems like.

Adam, i have no ideas for you, but have seen a couple of threads on this thing from ya. sorry to hear it has taken some work to get it right. good luck bud. :nice:

I installed one in my 91 and then took it out, From what I remember, it was a close fit, but didnt rub. I remember getting the console on was a pain, Found it easier if I set the e brake and then shifted down into 1 and held the lever back while I slid the console over top. Maybe a pic would help, but the only thing I could think of would be that the center console is not on all the way? If you want to send pics my email is [email protected]

About the console -- I tried moving it around some and didn't really get anywhere. Because of the way it's rubbing it makes me think it would have to be down too low or the shifter installed too high. But it looks ok, all the screw holes line up, and the shifter is on the floor. I'm not really sure about this -- but I'd like to have it done right. Any help is appreciated!

I'd hit it with a grinder. There's so many tolerances that could be off or something else like that. If you have everything in good and tight and in the right spot then I'd shave down that corner on the shifter a little.

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem. I thought about it and stared at it some more and decided it's probably because I don't have any sound deadening or insulation under the carpet. I figure it must have dropped the console down enough to cause some interference.

Anyway, I took my dremel to the console, and cut a notch out of the front lip, but only underneath where the plate goes. It will be completely invisible with the cover plate on but it dropped the console down enough it seems to fit really well now. I'm going to try and adjust it a little more to get it perfect tomorrow, but I think it will be good. I also had to adjust the post that moves the shift indicator, but I think I have that as well.

I'll take pics tomorrow to update you, and I may end up with more question as well.

Thanks for the help so far!

Ok, pictures are here.

I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. I may try and trim a little more, just to see if I can actually have the console not touch the shifter, but it doesn't seem to have any pressure on it right now, so I think it's ok.

Let me know what you think...

Nice...glad to see this since I'll be going through it when I swap my T5 for the C4. That's the shifter I'm thinking hard about getting.

Do those covers come with the shifter?

What tranny are you running?

Like I said earlier -- this may have just been because I don't have anything underneath the carpet so I think the console sits lower. I still think cutting the console may help anyway, as it was pretty tough to get it over the shifter and this would have helped.

The covers come with the shifter -- there's also a leather boot and some other stuff to really finish it off and make it look nice. For a C4 you need a seperate kit as well that comes with the right cable, etc.

Right now the tranny is stock, but I wanted to put the shifter on while I was waiting for my Lentech vb to come in the mail. So I'm basically starting with a Lentech Strip Terminator (w/ brake) and a TCI 3000 Stall converter for now.

I'm still not completely sold on the auto (I have all the stuff to go to manual) but figured since I have it and I've never done one, I'd like to try it for a little while.

IMO, if you can't afford everything you need for a blower, then you really shouldn't have one.
Yeah, I saw that on Summitt.

So you have a C4? Did you do a swap or what? I'm getting the C4 in the next few days and I'm going to have it built. Need to figure out the other stuff I'm going to need. Like if my starter will work, the crossmember, the tranny yolk, what flexplate to get.

I don't have a C4, still running the AOD. Sometimes I question why -- but it's what I have for now. Maybe if I like the auto I'll go to a C4 ... who knows?

I installed the hammer shifter about a year ago and I never encountered the problem you had. It does seem like your console is sitting farther back or something. I’m not quite sure to be honest with you. My install went fairly smooth and took the better part of the afternoon to complete. Glad to see you were able to work around the problem.

Here are a few pics of mine. I swapped the handle for a different B&M handle. I am also running an AOD until I swap it for the C4.
