Insurance Rip-off is driving me away!

  • Sponsors (?)

Thanks to all for your input. I am getting frustrated with this scenario and called my insurance agent to quote me on a Pontiac G6 and Chev Cobalt. Want to see if that makes much of a difference.

My household currently has the following vehicle:

04 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Dad is principal
96 Dodge Caravan Sport Mom is principal
93 Eagle Vision Tsi Daughter is principal
74 Fiat Spider 124 (Summer only) Son is principal

jadesville: Dominion of Canada is my insurer. I get multi-vehicle discount, good driving record discount (6*), and driver education course discount.

Contrarian: both my kids live at home

Lord Halbert: Toronto is second to L.A in North America for traffic volumes
so there's no break there

Klay: I got the same discounts. Wish I paid what you pay

GT-03: all parents will find out insuring teenage age kids up to 25 yrs is
real expensive.

2002GreyGT: you're absolutely right. The insurance companies rate female
drivers in 4 categories from age 16 to age 25. The last break coming at age 23. My daughter will get an additional discount next June.
However, all boys....(leadfoots) have only 2 categories from 16 to 25 yrs. In essence, they pay more.

RottenRonny: my last resort is to move to Saskatchewan. Your Roughriders should have been in the Grey Cup football championship game.

Insurance in NC

I live in Rowan County, North Carolina.
It is a rural county outside of Charlotte.

Allstate is my present carrier for a Ford 150 pickup trk and the house.

Was quoted $675 per 6 months for '05 Stang full coverage.

$675/6 mo. for a 05 Crown Vic.

$700-$800/6 month for a 05 Honda, Nissan, or Mazda.

And I thought these rates were high,

before reading the mail here.

Welcome to the boards!
What color is your new 05?

Was this directed to me? If so thanks for the welcome and I'm waiting until may before i get the mustang but it will be black most likely. I have never owned one before so this will be a new experience for me. If you meant someone else then disregard this lol.

Unfortunatly insurance is going to be high on the mustang for any young person. I am 25, have a clean driving record and taken the drives education classes when I was 16 and my prices is more then your sons. For a '99 Toyota Tacoma, 2002 Suzuki GSX R-600, and a 2005 Mustang GT (V8) I am looking at $4,500.00 (includes $1500.00 for the bike) a year. :notnice: Thats with my truck as the primary vehicle. The only way to make it cheaper I was told was to stay on my parents insurance becuase they have more vehicles and the house on the same insurance and can get a break. Oh well, I have decided I am going have to deal with it. I'm sure I won't even think about the insurance price once I get the car and get to drive it. :D

That doesn't sound too bad, if I was to let my 18 year old son be the occaisional driver on my Cobra my insurence would be $9,000. Even though he can't drive it my insurence is $3,000 just because he is in the house. $4,000 for a car with only 90hp less for a 21 year old driver sounds good. Insurance prices are absolutely insane now, especially in NJ.

My insurance agent called me today with updates quotes for the new GM cars, namely Pontiac G6 and Chev Cobalt.

Obviously, the insurers smack you over the head if you drive a 2 door vehicle.....it seems 2-door vehicle drivers are a real PITA over 4 door drivers. :nonono:

Look at the quotes I received:

2 dr V8 Mustang $4500
2 dr V6 Mustang $4100
2 dr Chev Cobalt SS $2900
4 dr Chev Cobalt LT $2600
4 dr V6 Pontiac G6 $2550

I'm seriously considering not buying the Mustang and getting the G6 instead.

Jeez, all this has now got me worried. I'm calling my company first thing Monday morning for a quote, want to know what I'm in for ahead of time.

I thought NJ was one of the highest cost states in the country for car insurance, seems others are quickly catching up. I guess our gay ex-governor might have made a dent in bringing the cost down after all, or at least holding the line.

Currently I'm paying $1800/year for 2 cars with AIG
2002 Jeep grand cherokee - full coverage
1993 Volvo 850 - everything except collision (the big ticket item)
Mine and the wifes records are clean, were both 35. I'd hate to have to make the decision to get the GT or not based only on insurance, that would suck.

I pay $80/year for my Triumph TR6 :D with Condon and Skelly, wish they were all like that.

i got 144$/mo through progressive (~1730/yr)... i got a pretty generous full coverage, too (i think the coverages in the 6 figure ranges)

25yo male, blank slate for the past 3 years...

i just firmed this up right now. i'm expecting to pickup my new 05 stang gt early next week!

:D

When I called California Casualty to add my 05 GT I was told, "That car is not allowed." I had been driving the car for two days and wasn't expecting that. I told her that I understood that in California new purchases were covered for 30 days. So I asked if I was currently insured. (Meanwile, I got on the net and got like 10 quotes for about $1000 a year)

After about five minutes, the lady came back on the phone and said, yes, they would insure me in a "high risk, high performance" category. Week later I got a letter that said I'd be dropped if I got a ticket or was involved in an accident. Basically, the insurance industry is expecting the 2005 Mustang GT to cost a lot of money in claims.

So....it's important that we 05 Stang owners stick together and do a good job driving and avoid nasty crashes. (No, really)

would they drop you if you got in an accident, without paying for the accident?

Darkhorse845: would be Legend Lime with Ebony Cloth interior

jerry s: I'll take your advice and get some more quotes from other insurers. Just, I've been with my current insurer for over 25 yrs and get great service and no problems when I need their help. But, just to appease my mind, I will call a new insurer and see what they can find.

Skywalker 44: you sure pay a lot! Maybe I should buy my son a truck first and then the Mustang

Donatukie: good idea to call your insurer BEFORE you buy the car. Most people buy the car first and then call then insurer for coverage. That's when the S...T hits the fan.

razamatan: great to hear you get reasonable insurance coverage.

RaiderSilverGT: exactly. It seems you're guilty of a major traffic offense just for driving a Mustang BEFORE you get any tickets. I thought you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Apparently NOT, when it comes to insurance coverage for young drivers.

My son and I have decided to sit on the fence with this one. NO MUSTANG COMING SOON TO OUR HOUSEHOLD. Waiting until 06, see the the new MY brings in terms of colours, additional options, and then requote for my 1 yr older kids. :bang:
