Is this possible

Help me with this problem. My brother is looking to buy this mustang for 8k or so. The car looks nice.

However, there seems to be a weird problem. The owner says that the speedo reads 250k miles. He says he was running the wrong speedo for 4 years  ? He believes the mileage is closer to 130k. Is this possible.

Considering a normal car driven 10k a year. Four years ago, the car would have had roughly 90k. 250k-90k= 160k on the speedo with only 40k actually driven. Keep in mind these are rough gestimations. So an incorrect speedo can quadruple the mileage showing on the speedo? :bs: ?

We will be getting a carfax on the car to confirm the SPEEDO story, but can anyone give me their advice as to getting a FISHY car like this. I am in no way calling this guy a liar, as i dont know him from adam, but i lack the knowledge in speedo gears to be able to believe this story.

Thanks,
Chris

Sorry to seem so persistent, but he is planning on buying this car soon. All i would like to know is would putting an incorrect speedo on a car lead to a possibility of having an incorrect mileage that more than doubles the reading?

If he put a spedo out of a completely different Mustang, then it would read the original miles on that Mustang and then whatever miles he put on his as well. I don't know if that's what you mean or if it is a gear messed up the reading.

yes it is possible to have the speedo read higher than what is actually on the car if he has changed gears in it... If he had the gears changed from say 2.73's to 4.10's and didnt change the speedo gear in the tranny, both the MPH and Odometer would be going faster than it really is. But having it be 120k miles off seems like a big jump...

I knew that having an incorrect speedo would cause the mileage to read a little high. I was unaware, however like 1105 suggested, that the incorrect speedo would account for an extra 120k on the actual mileage reading during the supposed 4 years the incorrect speedo gear was used!?

Okay, here's something to think about: This guy might be a moron for keeping the wrong ten dollar speedo gear in there for four years. Do you really want to buy a car from an idiot? Also, if this car is a 94/95 (I'm assuming since it's posted here), 8K is kind of a lot for a car with even the lower miles on your count. I think I'd say the hell with this and look for a better deal.

I agree with jermy82. You have no way of telling now how many actual miles are on the car. It's all fubar. Don't buy the car. I'm not entirely certain but I believe people have written laws exactly so this doesn't happen. For all you know he could have just installed different gears last week and the thing actually does have 250k on it... If he wants to buy that car he needs to take it in and have the powertrain and suspension thoroughly inspected and certified... and that would prolly cost more than the car is worth.

I just read that post you put up... it says he's selling a 95 GT with a DSS 306 in it that has 10K on the block. It seems to me that anyone that goes through putting a brand new DSS block in, with H/C/I, and all the rest, knows at least a little something about cars. Enough to know that you need to change the damn speedo gear, and that it takes 20 minutes to do. It also says he's running a 3.55 gear set. Who in their right mind puts in a racing block and a new tranny and then decreases the rear gear?

I appreciate everyone's responses. I am going to show this post to him. Hopefully it will sway him away from the car. I DON'T want to see him get SCREWED. I would not even feel better if we got it carfaxed. The biggest problem i see is that resale of this car, if ever, would be almost impossible. In a couple of years, the car would have like 300k. Who in their right mind would spend even 4k for a nicely rebuilt 300k mustang??? Thanks again EVERYONE.

If the gears in the rear end are changed from 2.73's to 4.10's, the speedo will read a 50% increase in mph and odometer readings. NOT 400%!!! This guy is an idiot. Do not buy from him!!
Who TF made you the expert? 400% :notnice: You have no clue what you are saying. :nonono:
