BBK SSI 5.0L Intake Vs. Cobra Intake

I am looking for a new Intake manifold for my 1990 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L w/ AOD. I have seen the new BBK SSI Intake Manifolds in 5.0L magazines, run for about $570 and saying they are worth a 30HP gain. This is about $200 more than what I can get the Cobra intake for. Is it worth it, or will the cobra intake do just as well? I'm planning of sticking with the original 302 block, with GT-40Y Aluminum Heads.

I got a Typhoon for about $350 (new) off ebay and it flows better than the Cobra, and you can access the runners for porting unlike the BBK and Cobra's uppers. Check one out before you buy either of those. The only dwonside is that it needs a little TLC to get rid of some casting flash; and port matching to the heads, which you'd be doing anyways.

i dont recommend either one, the cobra is old news and the BBK hasnt been proven yet.

i reccomend trickflow manifolds, i got my trickflow street heat brand new for 369.00......the typhoon is ok but you take a crap shoot on the quality, some are good, some are bad.

I vote Holley. Personally they seem to put out fantastic numbers and look great.

But to be honest you really cant go wrong with either of the 3 major brands
trick flow
holley
edelbrock
All are proven to make power

actully, i would take the Cobra.... and heres my reasoning:

you can get a cobra intake, used, shipped to your door for like $260. you save the $50 on a EGR spacer and its a good intake.

this way, that extra $50 and $300 you save over the BBK can be put to more useful things to help your car out.....

you obviously havent looked on ebay lately...used ones are going for over 300 and people are bidding on them......some used polished ones are goin for 400-450.....

why buy used when you could get brand new and spend maybe 50-100 more. you never really know what you are buying used...

Forget the Cobra if it's too pricey - get an Explorer (~$200) - same intake, same power and it will make as much or more average power on those Y heads than the larger cross section aftermarket intakes that cost a lot more.

I just saw a used cobra on corral go for 250 shipped about a month ago.

as for the typhoons... they are not woth the $. the runners look like crap, the bolt holes sometimes dont line up, there is clearence issuses with the dist.

More useful things for the car? Our stock intake SUCKS. The worst part in the whole 5.0 motor. Why would you shell out the $$ for a good, yet old. doesn't make the same power as the new intakes for just a couple hundred less? I don't see the reasoning? If your gonna do it right, do it right the first time, and buy a good intake, like Trick Flow or Holley. Just my .02. If you haven't got that much money, or don't want anything crazy at all, do like Tmoss said and get ya a ported Explorer intake from him.

by more useful i meant other things to help the performance. if you do the cobra, you can use the saved cash to get a FPR/gauge, put it toward gears... etc etc. The starter also didnt say what the car was going to be used for.
with the cobra, its cheap, effective and proven.
Maybe the starter of this thread doesnt have the cash for the high dollar intakes. trust me, i know as much as anyone picking the right parts the first time is key.

Daily Driver

Yeah, this car is used daily in the summer's here in NY...I'm just looking for some more HP and power for the streets. Also, I am looking to keep the Heads/Intake/Cam upgrade around $1600-$1800. I won't be installing any of it, so I gotta keep some loot for the install. I also just put a few bucks into some other suspension parts, so I'd like to keep the engine totals under $2000. Thanks fellaz.

I (and others) have proven this to not be the case on heads that have head runner sizes equal to or less than 185cc. The GT40 family of intakes can be superior to the aftermarket intakes if matched up with the right parts and/or ported correctly.

you're exaggerating about the runners, and the one I got bolted up just fine. and I saved enough to buy a 75mm TB and spacer to go with it.

Here is MY $.02 on this...BBK is a new intake...not yet proven but from what we know about it...BBK sure does use cunning techniques to prove their point with this intake...I would definately not get its since nothing is good about BBK anymore...THEY cheap out on a lot of their new stuff...The Cobra is a good intake...YES it's old but if you can find a used one...an original 93 Cobra intake not this cheap crap made in china...GET IT...Have Tmoss port the lower intake and it will be cheaper than the BBK one and will flow more...Holley is too big of an intake...and the TrickFlow intake is not that good...the lower is really good but the uppers SUCK...except for the R intake...and they are ugly as hell...The typhoon is an Performer RPM knockoff...SOME have said that it is in a rough shape as compared to the Performer intake...Well I have seen my share of Performers and if the casting is supposed to be worse on they typhoon than on the Peformers...I would definately stay away...Plus...they typhoon being equalvilant to the Performer RPM would be too much for your needs right now...As Tmoss stated...if you can find an Explorer and pick it up cheap get that...that would be your best bet...However, with those heads in all honesty Tmoss ported stock lower would work just as well since the heads only flow arount 215cfm/135cfm...
