I want to get a GT500, should I try to put a deposite down now or do you have to wait? Do you all think certain dealers will get more than others. I know it is more than a year away, but that is the car I want.
Thanks,
Bill

I've already hounded my SVT dealer, and as of right now they were not taking any deposits, only compiling a pre-order list ( of which I am #1). so good luck with your dealer, and hang on to your cash (I got a feeling we're gonna need it  )

05 Mustang GT
72 Mach 1
70 Shelby GT500 (tubbed, caged, and will eat any brand of rice at will)
61 F100 unibody(for sale)

deposits on gt500

Same here. Just a list of names to call when dealers are able to order. then work out what your going to pay, thats when you will need a deposit.

Went to my dealership last weekend and attempted to put down a deposit. Was told they didn't have it worked out yet.
But they took my name # and the like.

Today I went down and reached an agreement to buy the first one that comes to town at MSRP, I gave them a check for a grand, they wrote me a reciept.

I'm going to be talking to the sales manager monday or tuesday to verify that my salesperson wasn't smoking crack. The neat thing is that these guys sold 05 stangs at sticker when they first came out so.....

Salesman told me that realistically I should expect a car sometime in late 06 around september or october. We all know how informed some ford salesmen are, but let's hope this is on the up and up.

I wonder if I can hold my breath a year and a half???

Yeah I just got back from the SVT dealer where I bought my 05. I talked to the sales manager and asked to be first on his list for a GT500. They put me down as second on their list, the sales manager was first. He's not taking deposits yet but I will put one down as soon they start taking them. Not sure on the price yet but I may have to pay up to 3k over sticker. Not to sure if I want to do that though.

As far as my 05 goes, it’s staying in the family. I’m selling to my father at a huge discounted price of course. It will be kind of a retirement present for him.

I attached a letter to my deposit check effectively comitting the dealer to selling me the "first car" he gets. He is a large Saleen/SVT dealer and so should get a decent allocation. He gave me a receipt and we have a deal.

Here are some pieces of advice to consider when ordering a hot car form your dealer:

Always deal with the sales manager if you can...salesmen can screw up badly and you could end up way down the list or not get one at all. I speak from experience on this! Chances are good he wont even be there by the time your car gets in and he probably wont care about something so far down the road.

Get it in writing. I wrote a letter with the details of what I expect with my deposit. When they cash the check they have accepted the deal.

Bug them every few days till they take a deposit! There are lots of reasons for them to hedge...screw you on price, delivery date etc. You need to get them to make a comittment....if you want to guarantee yourself a car early on at a reasonable price.

My dealer didn't want to take a deposit either but I told him I wasn't taking no for an answer and he gave in. I explained to him I was a Mustang nut and I HAD to have one and I had been screwed in the past ("dont worry you are on the list") and I wasnt going to let it happen again.

Followup with the dealer immediately when order dates and details are announced, in writing and in person. Make sure they understand what you expect and the need for ongoing communication as order and delivery dates near.
