i have one thats like 2 years old and its looking really dirty but it works better and better the dirtier it gets (thats not to say that you need to go drag it around in dirt) but the first few times you use it you'll be pissed off especially if your car is black b/c the waxes on it will leave streaks

It saved me from a heart-attack...
I went out to my car after having it for a week, and some idiot had opened their door into my front right panel. NO!!! I tried to wash it off, scratch it off with my fingernail... It was just not coming off, and it was pretty big. I had just bought one of those California Car dusters the day before, so I took a clump of it in my hand and rubbed it really hard. I couldn't believe it all came off. Completely gone. (Fortunately it had not left a dent.)
After that, I was sold on those things. They work well.

They work great except.... I tried using mine in Las Vegas, Phoenix and it didn't work at all. Then, I used it in Baja California and only the bottom half worked. When I got back home to the City of Angels it worked like a charm again.
Bottom line, it's fantastic but it only works when used in California!
I've been using one for years. The box even tells you it works better as it gets dirtier. I got a new one because I wore my old one out and the handle broke. But do as the instructions advise. Let it air out for a few days before using it..... and don't use it on the windows until it gets broken in.

Oh... you obviously had one of those California special California dusters. Ya I can imagine it must be annoying when they hit the border and stop working. Alas those are the breaks when owning a "special edition"!!
I just put my 2 weeks old California Duster into the washer before reading this thread. I didn't have a clue that it had wax in it and that dirtier = better. So I threw it in the washer b/c I noticed waxy looking streaks after using it on my new black stang. I read this thread and I go "crap, I think I have one of those". I look into the washer and all my microfiber and cotton towels that I use to clean the car are red or have red residue on them. I took the California duster out and let it air dry, fortunately it still has a waxy feel. I'm currently re-washing the towels again.
Couple of questions:
1 - Did I ruin my microfiber/cotton cleaning towels?
2 - Did I ruin my California duster?
