A month or two ago, I wrote in about rust colored specs on my white 04 GT. They are not very visible, but if you get within 12-18 inches of the car and look at it closely, you can see them, and they cover the entire car. Noticed it within a week of buying it new at the end of January. Finally had a Ford factory rep. visit the car at the dealership today. As someone suggested here when I wrote in, sometimes when they are transported by rail, rust from the rails or from the train can kick up, and be so hot that it imbeds into the paint when it hits the cars. Ford rep. confirmed that suggestion yesterday. They are going to take care of it. It will be in the body shop for about a week May 2nd. They're giving me a loaner car. I'm glad they owned up to it. He suggested they will probably be wet sanding it. I'm assuming that means they would have to put a new clear coat on it. Before the Ford rep. looked at it, I clay barred a portion of the hood and it helped, but it only reduced the size of the specs, not get rid of them. I hope the body shop knows what they are doing.

****, my car has the same type of micro rust spots you talk about, barely noticeable unless I'm right up next to it like when I'm washing it. I need to take care of it. I'm gonna try and claybar it first, most the the spots are on the both doors and top of the rear bumper, not so much anywhere else.

My first Mustang, a 99 v6, had this problem but I never did anything about it. Really ugly on the finish especially since mine was silver. My current stang does't have this problem though.

Yep, i know rail dust too well. I rather just live with it then have Ford touch my car again

Not common on just Fords. Those rail (rust) dust spots are really on all vehicles .. it just shows up perfectly on white, and you can see it on light color cars (silver)

You can def get most of it off (if not all of it) .. I take that crap off everyday at work .. (own a detail shop) ...

Those spots are from atmospheric precipitants I think. Road grime, dust and dirt and the like that lands on the paint contains little tiny bits of iron shavings/filings from sources like big trucks and trains, trailers, industrial parks etc and I think that adheres to the paint and rusts there. Like others said, I think it's just most visible on a white car.

I recall seeing this way back when a friend had purchased a then brand-spanking new white 1989 Chevy Beretta GT: little micro rusty spots on the paint. Same deal.

For those with this problem, my experience is that the clay bar did a pretty good job of making specs smaller. Didn't totally get rid of them, but it is a definite improvement. Meguiar's paint cleaner didn't seem to do a thing to it, although I didn't use a buffer...

for those with this paint prob. and out of warranty, try bringing it to a good pro detailer. he/she may be able to remove them with an abrasive polish and machine.

I agree .. take it to a good detailer in the area. If they know what they are doing .. the spots that will come off, WILL come OFF.

Just pay for a wheel & wax, or a full exterior ..

If you were in the area, we'd do it for $50 - full exterior

*Update*

Car went into the body shop Monday, being wet sanded this week. They will then buff it after the wet sanding, should get it back on Friday. Should come out pretty nice, the service manager says he has gotten his show cars wet sanded before, so I feel good about how it's going to turn out. Hopefully the little bit of orange peel will be gone too. In the meantime I am going through withdrawal. The loaner car is a Taurus.

My wife says I am more upset over the car being gone than when the dog died....two more days to go.

That does not mean they are putting new clear coat on it. They are gonna just remove enough clear coat to eliminate the rust spots and then buff it smooth again. You will wind up with less clear coat than you started and it will shorten the life of your paint especially if the car is a daily driver and lives outside.

Yeah, I confirmed it yesterday, no clear coat to be added. It should shine like a son of a when they are done with it. Luckily, it is garage kept and I plan on keeping a good coat of wax on it. It is not a daily driver, maybe 2 or 3 times per week to work.

Little update on my part

I got the MrClean Magic Erasers from my auto parts place (They're packaged as special for wheel&tire but I'm pretty sure they're the exact same thing that you would find @ the grocery store) and long story short, it did the trick. I tried them first on a dark colored car to make sure it wouldnt take any paint out (but they really dont feel abrasive at all), and I was able to get each and every rust spot out of my white '03, cheap, easy and left no marks :nice:

Geez, I guess you could say its Magic!
